I'm stunned. One of the best voices of all-time and very influential on me as I was growing up. "I Will Always Love You" still gives me goosebumps 20 years later. She had some problems, and we should've seen this coming, but I am truly stunned. She was too much of a tragic figure, like Poe. This is perhaps the first artist that was such a large part of my life that has died.
I was shocked when I heard this news. I remember actually being moved to tears one time when I heard I Will Always Love You (Don't ask, I was very young at the time) and she did have a powerful voice. While her rendition of the National Anthem is not my top favorite (That belongs to the Dixie Chicks in 2002), it was still very good and very stirring. I can't believe how young she was. 48 is just too damn young. First Don Cornilius, now Whitney Houston. The year isn't getting off to a favorable start.
I can't say I was a fan, but she had an extraordinary voice, and 48 is just wrong. RIP. Here's hoping her daughter will have the support and stability she needs.
Agreed on both statements, weather you were a fan of her music or not. Credit where credit is due. taken way to young. Hope her daughter has a better support system than Bobby Brown. R.I.P. Miss Huston
RIP, I'm quite shocked, didn't see this coming at all. Far too early as well. Loved her voice, really sorry to hear this.
It's not what I expected to hear this morning. I'm not a great fan of her work, but you had to appreciate that singing voice that others attempted to emulate in her wake. RIP
^^ Stay classy dude, this is a RIP thread. While not necessarily a fan of her music, I can appreciate the power of her voice. RIP Whitney, I hope you can find some peace in what was a turbulent life.
Such a shame. I never listened to her music much, but I know so many of her songs so well. I'll be giving them all a listen again soon. RIP Whitney.
Really a shame, even though you could see it coming a mile away. She was tremendously talented, and allowed her addiction to steal it from her.
It's hard to choose a favorite among so many great tracks, but "The Greatest Love of All" is one of the best, most powerful songs ever written about self-preservation, and dignity. Its universal message crosses all boundaries and instills one with the hope that it's not too late to better ourselves. Since, it's impossible in this world we live in to empathize with others, we can always empathize with ourselves. It's an important message, crucial really. And it's beautifully stated on the album.
Her 1991 rendition of " The Star Spangled Banner" for Super Bowl XXV was one of the best public performances of that song. I'm glad to see the media playing clips of it. What a talent! And what a shame she has gone too soon. RIP.
When I was much younger, I always thought the lyric in the chorus was "You Can't Take Away my Big TV". After reading what the lyric really was, I just always smile. I think that's what Whitney Houston did for me. Every song she had in the early to mid 90s made me smile, or just have an emotional response. I already said there was a time when I would actually start crying when I heard "I will always love you" and it's those kind of memories I will always remember Whitney Houston by. The more I read about her the more I learn about her struggles, especially with Bobby Ryan and it's just a shame that abuse and drugs and whatever else (Not saying I know the cause of death however) can shorten what should have been a long and endearing life.
It was written about Muhammad Ali, years before anyone ever heard of Houston. Written and recorded by Dolly Parton, years before anyone ever heard of Houston.
Drowned in the bath, according to the first cause of death reports/rumours. That's... I know how senseless that one is, if it's true.
And Dolly Parton said that she thought it was a beautiful cover, and left a "RIP" message on twitter. She's dead ffs. Show some respect. My Mum happened to have one of her greatest hits albums, so I've been listening through that. Seriously, great voice. It's just a shame I haven't been listening to this before now.
Which changes their opinions and reactions to those songs, how? What point are you trying to male? That artists cover material written by or for other people? I was never a fan of Houston or the type of music she sang, but there was never a doubt that she was a talented singer. Unfortunate that in her latter years she was beset by so many problems and became fodder for the tabloids. Even yesterday one the tabs featured her on their cover.
