The 3 bedroom that my fiancee and I will be moving into on Saturday.
Welcome to the joys of home moanership.

 I was renting a similar sized Ranch house for ~$800/month a few years ago, and I believe that it would sell around the $140-150k mark.

The house we bought was even less than that! I'd be completely hosed if I ever had to move to an area with a higher cost of living. Good thing I'm not planning on it!

Yeah, the house I own in Indiana is bigger than that, with a detached garage, and cost about 10% as much as Squiggy's estimate.

But, you know, good luck finding a damn job in Indiana. There's a reason housing prices there have been so low!

 Yeah that's true. One of the big reasons why real estate is so high in DC is that there are always jobs in DC.

I have a friend in DC who rents a 1-bedroom apartment for nearly double what I pay to rent a 4-bedroom house. I can't help but wonder what her salary must be in order to afford to live that way.

^more specifically, Federal jobs

Who in their right mind would willingly work for the government? I mean, their SOP is; bend over and go to you happy place.

Like my t-shirt says: "I don't need sex. I get f*cked by the government every day."

Do you realize how many federal jobs are out there , types I mean? Chances are you would like some of them.

I've always thought it would be cool to be a federal employee at the Air and Space Museum in Washington. Being around all those cool aircraft, spacecraft and other displays five or six days a week would probably be pretty sweet for someone like myself who grew up admiring so many of those aeronautical accomplishments.

Mate, how can someone read that post and not realize that I was joking. We wouldn't survive without some government jobs. It would honestly kill us.

That is, until one of them dropped on your head because budget cuts prevented them from safely mounting the planes to whatever they're mounted to.

That is a beautiful house, Squiggy!
In fact, my inner house owner is getting all tingly. I want a house, dammit! Flats are nice, but ... look at it! The garden! The windows! Can I at least furnish and decorate it for you?

Yeah, here in my part of Virginia Squiggy's place would go for about 100K tops. Mind you, the cost of living in southwestern VA and the Roanoke metro area is peanuts compared to living in the D.C. area. So things even out.

The place I am buying about 10 miles north of DC is ~315k. You have to be an hour and a half out before you start to get normalized prices.

Sounds a lot like Toronto. The 2-bedroom condo I just bought was $272K, and that was an amazing deal. I've been renting a 1-bedroom apartment for the last 14 years, and in that time my rent has gone from about $980 to $1170. Given that we have rent controls preventing landlords from increasing the rent beyond a certain percentage unless the tenant moves out, I'd say you'd be hard-pressed to find even a bachelor apartment here these days for less than $1000, except perhaps on the very outskirts of the city.

I moved here from the San Francisco Bay Area, so I already knew what it was like to take it up the ass for rent. Living is much easier with a roommate, but it can be tough having to pay $1600 on your own now.

Here's a picture of me wearing a scarf my mom knitted to look like the scarf Watson has in the recent Sherlock Holmes movie.
