At the Prophet's Door - new DRGIII TNG novel?

Well, the TNG relaunch logo still looks like crap. :p But the rest of it, including the title/author text, looks neat. :)

I think it's quite a poor render really, with sloppy textures and crappy lighting....

It does say it's not the final cover. My understanding of CG imagery is that the preliminary version always looks cruder than the final render.

I think its a fair bet (if this is the actual cover) that the Galaxy-class ship is the Robinson, although its registry is odd at NCC-17842... and what kind of ship is that heading into (or coming out of...) the wormhole? :vulcan:

I thought the Robinson was a Nebula-class ship... or am I completely misremembering?

Also, the ship entering the wormhole appears to be one of the Defiant's shuttlecraft, like the Chaffee.

I just checked Rough Beasts of Empire, and the Robinson is indeed Galaxy-class. You must be thinking of the New York, the Nebula-class vessel that Sisko commanded during the Borg Invasion as seen in Chapter 2.

Also, the ship entering the wormhole appears to be one of the Defiant's shuttlecraft, like the Chaffee.

If so, then its size has been exaggerated enormously (or else it's just between the camera and the wormhole rather than actually entering it).

Ah yes, that's right. Thanks for checking that for me!

Yeah, the shuttlecraft is really over-sized by the looks of it... unless, like you say, it's much closer to the "camera" than it appears, or it's another, larger ship that just happens to look exactly the same... :)

Nice cover, I hope that is final. If it is, then I have a feeling once it's been finished it'll be beautiful.

If that's the solicitation cover (which, if I understand correctly, tend to be "rougher" than the final products), then I can't wait to see the final cover. That is a really awesome image. I am now even more excited for these books.

Perhaps it is the perspective, but have the sections connecting DS9's habitat ring to the docking ring always sloped downwards?

Ahhhh. I had always noticed that the rings weren't even, but I had never made that connection before. Good thinking!

That's true. I've done a little bit of work with 3DS Max years ago, I wasn't very good though. But I do remember (even then) that the average renders by amateurs were better then this image. Even if you look at the amateur CGI community, there is work being done that would put some pro's to shame. So if S&S would use this image, as it is right now, as a final cover, it would be pretty bad really.

This type of comment gets said a lot. So, is their work better because they spend so much time on that one piece of art so as to not make it profitable if they were trying to meet a publisher's tight deadlines?

'Cos if they really are that talented, why can't they get an agent and go into it professionally?

Beats me. All I know is, there is some great work done out there. Look at Deks, who used to frequent this forum, maybe still does. Made a mesh of the NX-01 that was AS GOOD AS the original. Look at the work being done on that Planet Of The Titans Enterprise in the art forum at the moment. Stunning. I wish these people could get paying jobs in that sector. Mind you, it's completely possible that they don't want to work in that sector, and keep their hobby a hobby. A mate of mine is great with cars, good mechanic and loves working on engines. He explained once that he would NEVER want to work as a mechanic, because that would ruin the fun he has in his hobby. Some people are like that, and I agree. I have skills and interests in areas that are a hobby to me, but could be made into job skills. I don't want it to become my dayjob, because it would make what I do to relaxe every now and then into something I MUST do every day.
Some people love that (turning a hobby into a job), others don't.

@ Christopher: I already agreed with you when you explained that it was not the final product.

Exactly. It stops being enjoyable when you have to complete commissioned works to tight deadlines. For some. But it's important to remember that when comparing amateur work (perhaps the product of months of minor tinkering) to pro work made to order in a matter of days (so the artist can take on more work to put bread on his/her table every week).

There's a big difference in talent levels between being able to take as much time as you want to put together a good image and being able to put together one or more good images on someone else's much shorter time table.

And seriously, why would anyone expect a work in progress to look perfect? Nobody has any patience anymore.

I did not at first realized this was still a work in progress. Had I, I wouldn't have commented on it the way I did. I hope I've cleared that now.

I just saw this cover over on TrekWeb yesterday. Looks amazing. I was suspecting the Enterprise to be on it too but its fine that the Robinson is, since Sisko was the commander of DS9 for 7 years.
I'm also trying to figure out what ship is coming out of the Wormhole myself. Don't look like a shufflecraft at all.

Ahh, but is it coming out or going in? It does look like the rear view of the Chaffee:

Scroll down to the bottom and you'll see some screencaps of its rear view. The second-last screencap shows it at an angle that almost matches what's on that cover image, although it doesn't have that lower pair of lights.
