Has anyone said Charlie Sheen yet?

But seriously, I think Lena Heady is a good idea, Keifer Sutherland, Hugh Laurie could pull it off, (hugh would have to be a hands off type captain though, dont want to see him fist-fighting klingons) Nathan Fillion of course would be amazing, Josh Holloway from lost.

LOL I couldn't take Charlie Sheen seriously as a Captain I'd be expecting one of his rants every time he came on screen although it probably would make it funny I guess :rommie:

I would love to see david tennant in the captains chair, though it would be weird seeing the 10th doc on trek.

How would people feel about Jack Scalia. He's sixty but he's interesting to watch and a man's man. Tough as nails veteran hero type and about the age of a real life Captain Robert April would be if there ever was such a thing. Micheal Madson also sticks out in my mind as being memorable, likable and interesting to watch. I haven't seen him lately. The younger Mickey Rourke was my pick back in '87. For his intensity and magnatism and drawing you into his character conflict and what he's going through with the weight of command. Sex appeal can't be underrated though as the new movie proves but this is a guy show. Just bring back the red mini skirts and some hot actresses and it'll be fine.

    Oooh...Yes, that could be awesome.

Also another Ben Browder vote and I'll toss in Ben Mansfield to appear in it somewhere (He needs a role we can see him in 20+ episodes a year)

I Also like the Daniel Dae Kim suggestion (Though Hawaii 5-0 is going strong, so, probably wouldn't be able to get him) and Nathan Fillion would be great

^ See, to me, they're all such predictable options. A lead from Babylon 5, a lead from Farscape (and Stargate), a lead from Crusade and a lead from Firefly. By and large, they've all done the sci-fi captain thing before. I'd rather be surprised, like how I was with Patrick Stewart or Avery Brooks or Nathan Fillion, with that matter.

So let's think of TV actors who could handle the role but not based on their performance in any space opera series...

    Timothy Olyphant
    Katie Sagal*
    Bryan Cranston
    Michael J. Hall
    Jennifer Morrison**
    Lance Reddick
    Andrew Lincoln
    Brian Austin Green
    Esai Morales***

I could see Michael Emerson, Josh Holloway and Naveen Andrews in Star Trek, just not as the captain.

And if anyone been watching Pan Am (cue crickets), the entire crew could be transported to a Star Trek series, especially Christina Ricci and the guy who plays Ted. (Not seeing any of them as the captain, tho).

*Futurama doesn't count - I'm thinking of her SoA persona - Janeway would run and cry and hide under the bed. :p

**Yes, Kirk's mommy is captain material, based on her performance in Once Upon a Time. Maybe more natural as the space-pirate captain sort, tho.

***Mostly based on his role in Jericho. I dunno if you can legitimately call Caprica "space opera" anyway.

So long as it's not an unpleasant surprise like Capt "No Personality" Archer (I always wanted Michael Ironsides to come in as the Marine Commander to counter balance Archer's boring-ness)

Scott Bacula was just too ubiquetous and old. Now Anthony Caruso is coolest not that old guy there is but I'd still like to see someone less known, dynamic and younger.

They pretty much all work for me. And even though I saw Morales in Caprica, I first thought of his role in NYPD Blue - he convinced as an authority figure there and could cut it as a Starfleet officer. He turns up in the Treklit forum quite a lot, on a various people's casting wishlist for the Latino captain in the Vanguard series.

Incidentally, Lance Reddick is a big ST fan and got into acting because of Trek. He said that he only mentioned this to his Fringe producers after they'd begun casting for ST '09 and was gutted when they said 'Oh, if we'd known that, we had a role that would've suited you, but it's already cast now!' (I'm guessing Robau).

I like the Star Trek: USS Pan Am suggestion, by the way!

I agree about the Scott Bakula point. But again, that was TPTB looking at other sci-fi shows - they figured that casting an actor with a proven background in genre or sci-fi tv had worked for Stargate and, to a lesser extent, Andromeda (say what you want about it but it ran for longer than ENT or Firefly). So they got Bakula as a safe sci-fi choice, instead of going for the offbeat choice like they did with Stewart and Brooks.

Maybe that's why I've been watching The Wire (for the first time) and I keep envisioning him in a Starfleet uniform. :D There's just something about his acting style...
Thanks! I didn't think anyone here was even watching. (The series hasn't been cancelled and is apparently getting a back half for the first season, surprisingly enough.)

^ I'm watching it mainly cos the wife is. It's not bad, looks nice and attractive cast, but it's really fluffy and insubstantial. It's no Mad Men.

The more I think about it, the idea of a Star Trek captain being played by someone who is relatively known for another role was really a Berman-era thing (Brooks was largely known for Spenser For Hire and A Man Named Hawk; Mulgrew was still remembered for her time on Ryan's Hope; and of course Bakula for Quantum Leap). A new producer may go the Roddenberry and Abrams route and cast someone who has a number of screen credits to his or her name, but isn't that familiar a face in Hollywood like Shatner, Stewart, and Pine were.

That seems the way to go as some of these younger guys on these ongoing lawyer shows are not yet that recognizable anyway. They look like super heroes - the square jawed type. I'd assume casting the actor will have to do directly with what type of character the creator of the show wants him to be. Usually an actor will play a character. In Trek it was the opposite. The writers wrote the actors until they wore them out and they were playing themselves.
