David Foster Preparing to Pitch New ‘Star Trek’ Series

^ They may be caricatures, but they were memorable and well-defined compared to most tv characters from that era. And they were way more fun than most of the dull crew from TNG (with the exceptions of Picard, Worf and Data).

Let's face it after Picard went action hero captain, Riker became redundant.

True, the characters were not that different from what was on TV ( and film) before, during and after TOS. No real new ground was being broken.

^ At first, maybe. But between the writers and Nimoy, he was given plenty of nuance, backstory and character.

There's a reason why he turns up in lists of Greatest TV Characters of All Time and Tonto etc don't.

He's still represenative of that archtype. And most of his memorable moments involve either his conflicting "halves" or playing up his differences.

Tonto isn't a halfbreed. He's a different trope. The native sidekick.

^ Everything has to be taken in its context and setting. And name a show from that era with more memorable, better defined characters. Faint praise it may be, but ST still deserves credit for being best in this department.

I mean, if there was such another show, presumably we'd all be on a BBS devoted to that show...

Why? You think we're all here because of the amazing characterization on TOS?

And yeah, Gilligan's Island is a good example of a show that's as clearly remembered by as many people and for every one of its characters...even the Professor.

I actually remember gilligan's island better than TOS I think because of it's more disturbing undertones with the two chicks and the old lady (death and sex). That and Gomer Pyle (wondering whether he's gay or not and that sort of thing) At least they didn't have any slash fanfiction or films. Thank God.

I think the characterisation was more memorable than say Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Space 1999, Lost in Space, the original BSG etc. (Or indeed than TNG, VOY, ENT, Crusade, Babylon 5, for that matter). I don't think we're all here because of it, no, but it was one of the many good things about TOS that made it memorable.

I've never actually seen Gilligan's Island, so I can't comment on it.

I especially like how he drops other writer's names in as if they endorse and support what he's doing or even like it. Except Manny Coto, of course.
