The most disappointing Trek Movie..

I know it's a favorite with a lot of fans, but I rank First Contact as my least favorite. As has been said in some critiques of the film (Plinkett does a great review), I just found Picard's violent obsession with the Borg, to the point where he was willing to see his security forces continue fighting and dying, and possibly continuing to be assimilated, rather than abandoning ship, until Lily convinced him ... just way out of character to the Picard we saw in TNG. I remember always wondering, if it had been Riker down in the halls fighting the Borg invaders, instead of Daniels, would Picard have allowed the fighting to continue for so long? How many of the Enterprise crew were assilated while Picard delayed in ordering the ship evacuated and destroyed? I lost quite a bit of respect for the character in that movie, because even though he eventually did give the order ... it took a lot of convincing. And Picard never got crazy obsessed like that in the other Borg episodes... so why now??? Yeah ... don't like FC mainly for what it did to Picard's character ...

The absolute truth, I suppose, is ST:TMP. I remember now that I'd been forewarned a little about TFF by someone at the studio, so it's not fair to say that it was the most disappointing at the time I first saw it.

This is made a bit difficult to sort out by the fact that at least four of the pre-Abrams films were letdowns of one kind or another: ST:TMP, TFF, TUC and Nemesis.

I was let down by TMP being so drawn out, boring, and largely pointless, but in other ways, mainly the FX and ship design, I was completely blown away by it. The net effect was that it was not the most disappointing for me. I had also made the realization ahead of time that it couldn't possibly live up to my expectations, so that helped cushion the blow.

Nemesis.

1: The totally unecessary rape of Troi.

I can see calling it "uncomfortable," but "unnecessary?" Not sure what you mean. It's not like you were watching a real rape here, it is fiction, part of a story.

And I hope all reading this know it was not a physical rape, as someone who didn't see the movie would assume, but a mental rape, violation or intrusion. (I think 'rape' is too strong to use, even Troi called it a violation.)

And it's not like it was done, brought into the story, and then never had any bearing on the story. Troi got her revenge, and used her mental link to Shinzon to find his cloaked ship. I thought that was nicely done. And just because it was a "mental rape" doesn't change that.

2: One of the most credulity breaking pieces of tech ever (micro transporter? Don't even get me started)

Never understand someone who can buy so many other incredible, impossible things in Trek but can complain about how one thing is not "realistic." Huh?

3: One of the most pointless deaths ever.

Every "fan" gets their panties in a bunch any time anyone dies - even though in Trek just about everyone who dies manages to come back to life somehow, which makes you wonder why anyone cares when someone "dies," because they'll just be back.

4: Patrick Stewart is a prick. (He made a plea for all the fans to go and see the movie on opening weekend. Which I did. I traveled through a SNOWSTORM because my Captain asked me to. I got treated to one of the vilest pieces of shit ever (one which my wife actually walked out on). And then on monday what was my reward? Having to listen to Stewart on GMA carry on about how the fans didn't support the movie. Gee Patrick it couldn't be that we didn't support it because it SUCKED could it? No of course not. You offered us this perfect gem and we ungrateful bastards spurned your precious precious gift. And yes in case the subtle hints were confusing you, I'm still a little bitter.)

Maybe you shouldn't take direction from an actor, and make your own determination as to when you want to see a movie, and when it's safe to do so given weather conditions where you are.

My choice in this discussion was TFF. And while I disliked that movie, I wouldn't go so far as calling it a "vile piece of shit." Seems a bit extreme.

Space battles are boring as fuck after about three minutes. The sole real exception is the Death Star run in Star Wars, but that one example has kept Hollywood grinding 'em out for thirty-odd years now.

I don't often compose single-word responses to a post consisting only of the word "this", but ...

This.

...

Wait. I screwed that up, didn't I?

Yeah. Far too many words there. Nice one, Psion. Because now you've screwed my one word post. It would have been:

Nemesis.

I should soooo remove you from my friends list. ;)

I can't say that I dislike TMP. I really think it is a good movie but... I fell asleep when I first saw it

I have 4 ways of answering this. Most disappointing overall: STV

Most disappointing because they could have done better: ST:Insurrection

Most disappointing because it was pretty decent but nobody saw it: ST:Nemesis

Most disappointing because it was dull in first run: STTMP

RAMA

Nemesis. It always leaves me with an empty feeling inside, something no other Trek film at their worst/silliest has done before or since. Although Generations becomes more disappointing with each viewing.

I rewatched the movies couple weeks ago and I thought TMP was the worst. I like the story and visual effects, but the total lack of chemistry between the characters left me cold. Everyone seems to be acting with something stuck in their asses... (sorry about it)
I didn't see it at first, but when I watched TWOK right after, you can see and feel friendship from the first scenes.

IIRC, Troi's been mentally violated before on the show, but only once was there sexual imagery involved. Nemesis brought that back. And it's perhaps the sexual imagery and swapping out her true love for the villain in mid-scene (hence heavily denoting control and domination, which is the primary reason for rape) which makes people equate it to rape.

I remember watching the DVD commentary on the Nemesis deleted scenes, where someone, IIRC Stuart Baird, casually begins a segment by saying "Originally, there were two rapes..." :wtf:

TVH. Really. I'm not kidding. I despise that piece of sanctimonious tripe. Honestly.

Nemesis had serious issues. To put it baldly, it rather sucked. But it didn't insult my intelligence quite as overtly as TVH.

TFF is a guilty pleasure for me. I have always been a fan of David Warner and was quite pleased that he actually survived a film for once! It was hokey, the humour was ham handed and overplayed and the climax was anything but, yet I still enjoyed it.

Generations gave us the refit Excelsior class Big E-(B)! Woo hoo! I love that particular ship. But the movie was a disappointment in so many other ways.

TWOK. I'm not a troll. Really. But I don't really care as much for this one as most. Everyone raves over the ship to ship combat scenes, but I found them unbelievable in the extreme. I enjoyed the story and character interaction, but the galleons in space slugging it out yardarm to yardarm in the best 2 dimensional tradition of Captain Blood had me squirming in my seat!

Nemesis. I remember being so excited that another Trek film was coming out, I followed every bit of new information concerning the movie on various Trek sites and thought that the initial premise and idea sounding very promising. Then I saw the film and was bitterly disappointed. At the time, it seemed as if Nemesis would be the death of the Trek film franchise, I was surprised when years later, I heard they were making a Trek prequel. I had believed that Nemesis had truly killed any possibility of more Trek films.

Final Frontier was also pretty bad. The movie seems really campy to me, the humor is flat at best when it isn't downright insulting. Also, this film seems to be all about why nothing in the Federation works. It's not that I expect the Federation to be this perfect and wondrous utopia...but the Federation in FF is so inept that I'm surprised that the Klingons hadn't taken it over by now. Nothing works, and the movie is far from subtle in showing this. I feel like I'm being beaten over the head with a bat that reads "The Future Is Really Shitty...Also Gratuitous Divine Comedy References." A movie with references to Dante and fart jokes, awesome.

When was the first time you've seen that movie?

In the theater on opening day. Watched it all but uncountable times since. The only Trek films I haven't watched over and over and over again are TVH, Insurrection and Nemesis.
