Larry Crowne

Watched this movie this weekend and there is a hilarious DS9 part that lasts about 10 seconds. I think only people that have been to this forum would get it. Probably the best part of the whole movie, especially since it was only average. Just wanted to put the word out so you guys wouldn't miss it. :bolian:

Okay, you have to please elaborate, because...

a) I've never seen a DS9 reference in a major motion picture, and would like to know why and how it's done in Larry Crowne
b) I plan on seeing Larry Crowne myself, like, never ever

Hanks co-wrote the movie and he is a big Star Trek fan, an maybe DS9 is his favourite?

The scene (sort of)

Mack (Malcolm Barrett) is standing in front of the class, in uniform.

Mack: This may be beyond comprehension, but, there are many people who dismiss Deep Space Nine in favour for the original or The Next Generation. Altough I too am a fan of both of Roddenberry's visions there is no version of Star Trek I do not enjoy. None. As you can tell by my uniform had I the chance to attend Starfleet Academy I would have studied the life sciences...

The teacher, Mercedes (Julia Roberts) interrupting him, asking the class where Larry Crowne is, then

Mercedes: Mr Mack, please continue on the Star Wars...and the deep space

Mack: I can't..even begin to tell you the difference between Star Trek and Lucas Star Wars saga... it's... Live long and prosper......... (he touch his combadge) energize.

To quote Peter Griffin, that reference is freakin' sweet. The only other reference to DS9 in a film that I know of is in Swingers.

It might be a burn on George Takei (who is in Larry Crowne) for his negative comments on DS9 recently.

I must've missed Takei's comments on that subject. Is there a TrekToday where I can see what he said?

The wiki article has a link to this:

George Takei in an interview with iF Magazine (whatever that is/was) from 2007 said:
The people that really understand and love STAR TREK are no longer there. When Gene Roddenbery passed, that really was the end of STAR TREK, as we knew it. The series that came on immediately after was DEEP SPACE NINE, which was the polar opposite of Gene’s philosophy and vision of the future, so STAR TREK lost it’s way then and now the people at Paramount are all new people.
