What unseen parts of the ship do you wish we saw?

One last thing about Sulu before putting that whole thing to rest. According to Wikipedia, "Takei's sexuality had been an open secret among Star Trek fans since the 1970s." The fans probably learned of this through meeting him first hand, well after the series ended. Remember, most gays in the 1960's would not be "out of the closet" for fear of hurting their careers. Given how minor Takei's part was on TOS, and him being at the very early stage of his acting career, I highly doubt he let onto anyone about his sexual preferences... certainly not to the production or writing staff. Thus, I don't think it makes any sense whatsoever to try insinuating anything like this, that there was anything intentionally suggestive about him in the episodes. It just becomes a dead-end exercise in revisionism, as Warped9 pointed out.

As I recall George Takei's autobiography, his "gayness" wasn't a secret to his castmembers or the production crew. His boyfriend of the time (forget his name) would show up on the set occasionally, and when there were end of season parties and the final series wrap party, he came as George's date.

Even so there's no way they would dare telegraph that even subtly on mainstream television of the '60s.

Can I just throw in one last thing about Sulu's (non) gayness?

In TAS "Magicks" eps, the crew's thoughts are brought to life like magic. What does Sulu conjure up? A geisha lady.
If given the power of magic to create anything he wants, Sulu comes up with a cute hottie for himself.
Well done, Mr. Sulu.

^ But was it a Japanese Geisha? Or was it a Japanese Newhalf? The kimono and body appearence would be the same.

Either way, "a cute hottie."

:)

So back to the actual point of this: the nacelles... still mostly unexplored after 700 episodes.

I mentioned up above, TAS eps showed Kirk and Scotty bringing antimatter into what appeared to be a nacelle.

In the Enterprise episode "Catwalk" crew has to take refuge in the nacelles for a couple of days. I know not TOS, but I thought I'd point it out. :)

Speaking of the catwalk we see in Enterprise... When we see Scotty head up into the Jefferies tube near main engineering, isn't this the tube that heads up into the warp nacelle pylon? If so, it would've been interesting to see an episode where he has to crawl all the way to the top, giving us an interior view of the warp engine machinery and electronics.

It's a nice idea (and ties in nicely with the angle of the Jeffries Tube and pylons) but wouldn't there have had to be two Jeffries Tubes, opposite each other.

I must politely refute; we never saw the cat walk. M'Ress was always depicted either sitting at the comm' station or shot from the waist up when standing. But the animators never created a walk cycle for her.

What?

Oh, "catwalk", not "cat walk"? Sorry.

Sincerely,

Bill

Please don't. If anyone else wants to discuss this non-related subject any further, start up your own thread and keep it out of this one, please.

A theory I've always liked is that the angled structures we see behind the window at the rear of main engineering criss cross and lead up to the nacelles.
