Pirates and Harry Potter were my two big 'must-see' summer flicks, though the new Planet of the Apes film has me interested as well, as it's more connected to the original 1968 movie rather than the abomination that Burton gave us.

Never saw Burton's POTA. After hearing all the bad things about it from fellow fans, probably never will.:rommie:

It's two hours of my life I wish I had back!

The movie seemed a bit lighter on the special FX than usual IMO. Nothing really stand-out like Davy Jones...

Did anybody else think they kind of ripped off Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade a bit with that ending?

From an FX point of view, how do the mermaids look?

I think it worked out better that way with less FX.

I was also reminded a little of The Last Crusade with the ending. They ended up getting destoryed for different reasons though. The Grail was lost when the Nazis tried to take it away from the temple, while the Fountain of Youth was destroyed on purpose by the Spanish. The FOY also worked much different from the Grail, it actually just exchanged your life with another person's. The FOY wasn't that great when you think about it, since it required a victim.

I thought the FX for the mermaids were very well done. They were beautiful and seemed otherworldly. It was definitely my favorite part of the movie.

Thanks for that. Really looking forward to fitting this in.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - Discussion and Gradi

^ What kind of movies are your friends normally interested in? Maybe they just don't like pirates films.

No, they just aren't interested in seeing the 4th film in an already mediocre franchise. The first film was great, and we all wanted to like the sequels, but they were a huge mess.

We actually were excited about this new Pirates movie, thinking it would be a good way to give the franchise some new life. Then we saw the previews, which do not make the movie look entertaining at all. When I see a trailer for an action movie, I should not be thinking, "Man, that looks boring."

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - Discussion and Gradi

I couldn't disagree more. I was only mildly interested in this, until I saw the first trailers, which I thought made it look like alot of fun, and not at all boring. The only reason I haven't seen it this weekend is because I'm working, and I plan on seeing when I am off on Tuesday.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - Discussion and Gradi

I thought the trailers were pretty good.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - Discussion and Gradi

I dunno. Every trailer I've seen has made me care less and less. It probably doesn't help that my favorite part of the first trilogy was Jack and Will. I am really not Johnny Depp's hugest fan.

I didn't hate the movie, but I wasn't that impressed. My full review is here.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - Discussion and Gradi

Well I definitely liked the movie and enjoyed a return of the franchise, but it wasn't quite as amazing as the previous ones. I definitely didn't miss Will and Elizabeth, but I did miss the scale and amazing action sequences of the first one.

How come they introduce Blackbeard's magic power of controlling every inch of his ship, and then never proceed to actually have a battle on his ship where he uses that power?

How come they introduce Blackbeard with his beard flaming all cool like... and then proceed to never show him again this way for the rest of the film?

I just read that Stranger Tides had LITERALLY HALF the budget of World's End. It went from 300 to 150 million. No wonder it felt so small in comparison!

Yeah, I was also disappointed that we never really got any kind of ship battle. A small one would have been nice. Sadly, I don't think the maelstrom ship battle in AWE will ever be topped.

Where did you hear 150 million? That sounds too low. Boxofficemojo lists the budget as 250 million, which sounds more reasonable. Jerry Bruckheimer needs to learn how to keep the budgets for his movies down. I'm guessing much of the budget went into Depp's paycheck.

Did the Fountain look like the Guardian of Forever to anyone else?

I give this film 3.5/5. All flash no substance, but better than the last two.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - Discussion and Gradi

I enjoyed it. It was a bit closer, in tone, to the first movie, having gotten rid of the overly complicated and bloated feel of the second and third films. It was a fun and enjoyable adventure, which thankfully tells a (mostly) complete story on its own. If they do any more (which I'm sure they will) I hope they keep the one movie/one story approach. No more of these "epic" two-part stories designed just to cash in on the name, please.

B (Above Average)

Now that you mention it, it totally did. All it needed to do was start talking and it would have been the Guardian's little brother.:rommie:

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - Discussion and Gradi

The Guardian of Forever was the first thing I thought of when they finally made it to the Fountain of Youth. :)

Cheers,

Yes, there is a scene at the end of the credits.
