For those of us experiencing it on DVD or on PBS back in the day... those were self-contained movies that had no larger storyline, except for the few like Key to Time.

Ah, but, you got the episodes of the stroyline spread out over 4-6 weeks, 1 episode a week (In the original British airing). Conitnuing Storyline could also be considered for Keeper of Trakken through to Castrovalva, which is 12 weeks. Also, the E-Space Trilogy, which was also 12 weeks.

Not the fact some questions were unanswered, but as has been pointed out there is a level where it makes no sense. Whether that's the whole "on the run" plot at the start, they had Presidential authorisation, why did they need to pretend to be on the run?

To keep the Silence off guard. The way they played it (remember Amy asking Canton if he remembered what happened at the warehouse right before he "shot" her?), it would seem as though that the Silence had gotten wind of the fact that the five of them had found them out, so they got to Canton, gave him a suggestion to hunt down and execute the other four, and that was that. Unless the Silence have a hive mind or some other remarkable degree of coordination, they'd assume one of the others had just taken care of it.

Yeah, but for all they know the Silence could have been watching them and know it was a ploy anyway. So even that doesn't really make sense.

Given the Silence are presented as being able to zapp people at will, why go to the subterfuge: they could just find the companions and eliminate them. It's not like no-one ever goes missing mysteriously, even in America. Come to that, The Silence are apparently able to read minds (Joy's, at least) so they'd have known it was a ploy.

It makes for some great dramatic moments, but no sense at all.

Pretty much what I said earlier, might make for an exciting chase scene or a creepy bit but doesn't really make a whole lot of sense.

^ You have merely made an assumption that they can read minds. There is no proof of that statement. He could just have easily known Joys name from standing behind her for a few moments one day.

Still they don't have to be able to read minds in order to have been spying on them at some point without them realising.

I'm not sure the Silence could actually read minds. The one in the lady's room probably knew Joy just from having observed her. Also, that zap ability of theirs didn't appear to be terribly fast or accurate. There was quite a build up required to obliterate Joy, and a room full of Silence couldn't hit River or the Doctor in the middle of a firefight.

Edit to add: Ah. I see I've been beaten to the mind-reading observation.

This works for Joy, but how would he know that Amy is really Amelia?

From having observed her, along with Prisoner Zero, while she was growing up? She wouldn't have any idea that they were ever there. And, until recently, lines from Prisoner Zero such as "The Silence will fall" didn't mean anything, just throwaway lines ... Only now, we know better.

The question I have about this mysterious power of theirs is, does it only work on Humans and Time Lords? How did Prisoner Zero remember them? Or the not-Vampires in Venice?

And just what does that even mean, "Silence will fall"? Are we being told from the very beginning that they will be defeated? That's usually what "fall" means in this context.

In typical time traveling fashion, do the Silence destroy the Tardis because of what the Doctor did to them here?

Darkness falls, too, so perhaps that's the context implied by the "Silence will fall" line; that they swoop in and shroud everything in their ... malevolent ... Silencey ... stuff.

I got the feeling that the Silence falling was going to be a bad thing for the Doctor...but at this point I'm not sure of too much.

When did we find out that the Silence made the Tardis explode? Because I totally missed that.

Something I missed watching it the first time

When in the fuck did the sonic screwdriver turn into a laser gun?

Don't get me wrong I enjoy a story arc, and mystery and yes I acknowledge that this is ep2 of a new season, but the silence have been around since the last season, and we're no closer to answers, one answer results in another can of worms with too many threads, and if this spills into another season, my interest will fade again.

To be fair, the Silence were in last season in the same way the Dominion were in early second season DS9 episodes. Only less, since DS9 at least made it clear they were talking about a race that people would meet later. If the next episode that focuses on them (not just a "we ran from the silence" type comment) doesn't give more answers, then I think people can start complaining.

or the fact they were writing on their faces and areas they wouldn't see very easily, what's the point in that if it's supposed to let them know they've had an encounter?

The point wasn't to let them know they had an encounter, it was to count their numbers. When they meet up with others to count tally marks, the others can see the ones on their faces.
