How dost thou rate the Doctor's adventure?

I noticed this episode didn't have that that pre-titles Amy intro -- at least not on the SPACE broadcast here in Canada. Did BBC America have it again?

The overall effect of The Doctor's meddling would not kill off all Silents, but it certainly makes their life much harder.

Prior to this, the Silents could simply stroll into any high security facility and take whatever they need. Now, they'll have to contend with armed guards who will kill them on sight.

all i have to say is this two parter blew my mind. it was fun, creepy, exciting and funny. there were so many great moments. i'm glad i stayed away from spoilers for this season.

of course, i dunno about you, but i don't repeatedly watch it, im sure a lot of people have never seen it, so over time there will still be a lot of people who have never seen it, kind of a weak plan, works in the short term well, but the long term meh

Except if you ever see one, your suddenly remember all the previous times you've scene them. So, if you saw a recording of the moon landing in 8th grade and see a Silent when you're 34 you should remember that you're supposed to kill him on sight.

No, unfortunately it didn't. I liked that bit.

And does anyone else find the Apollo moon landing footage being transformed into a call to genocide a little unsettling?

Like someone else said upthread, it would have been nice if they'd have somehow accounted for the missing "a" before "man" in Armstrong's famous line.

that isn't how it really is though

I know. Just like Irish aren't stupid, and Finns have a sense of humour, and not all Brit drink tea. Personally, I think it was silly making the plot depend on it in this story, but 'kill on sight' doesn't work in an enviroment where very few people go armed.

But is the Doctor's goal to have The Silence slaughtered or is simply to put the fear of the God into them in the hope they'll scarper before they run into some-one who's armed.

Given that they apparently always go armed, with that electrical 'I can zapp you in the ladies room' thing in their bodies, I doubt the risk we present from the minority of us who've seen the clip, and the minority of that minority who carry weapons is enough to make them leave.

I'm also mystified why people who can build and run a space ship (that looks like a sort of TARDIS) need humans to build a space suit. One that they can then completely customise for a different purpose, using a selection of stolen technology.

It doesn't sit well with me that the Doctor sets out to destroy them without asking what their aims are. It seems out of character for him - this is the man who gives everyone (including the spider queen) a chance of an alternative.

As others have said, the more you look at this, the more it falls apart in your hands, despite it being a fun romp at the time.

Food for thought: Osama bin Laden's downfall came from a Navy SEAL watching the Moon landing on Youtube.

He did give them a chance. He gave them one chance to surrender and leave peacefully. They refused. As you noted, they are all automatically armed, and, frankly, they're all part of an occupying army. That means that there's no such thing as a Silent noncombatant. Thus, with the possible exception of any Silent children, any Silent on Earth is a legitimate military target.

We don't actually know that. They've been here for hundreds upon hundreds of years. We have no clue what's going on with them, other than what could have been the empty threats of a wounded individual we have no clue what they were doing. If someone told you you had to leave because you were an occupying force in the US how would you react?

I really cant imagine the Doctor saying 'legitimate military target'. I think its more likely that nobody could think of how to get rid of the Silent, so they had to go with killing them. IM talking about the writers here, not the characters.

A few nuggets of pure 'Who' but apart from that, its an unfinished story that is just trying to be too clever, I've been enjoying the Doctor's return since the 9th, but now my interest is waining... like with so many shows across the pond, e.g. LOST, THE XFILES, we end up with a story arc that ends up being dragged too far that we lose interest, XFILES had me for so long until series 4, eventually I caught up sometime much later and saw the last episode, but by that point I was past caring about its resolution.

Don't get me wrong I enjoy a story arc, and mystery and yes I acknowledge that this is ep2 of a new season, but the silence have been around since the last season, and we're no closer to answers, one answer results in another can of worms with too many threads, and if this spills into another season, my interest will fade again.

Of note there was a series that followed a good template, Odyssey 5, it was cancelled, but in one series of this sci-fi conspiracy thriller, they answered alot of questions, so it felt that the show was getting somewhere, there was still a great deal of mystery but the pace of the plot and story held you.

My greatest irritation with British writing these days, is that amongst the gems and nuggets there is writing that tries too hard, The Avengers was an example of great writing with mystery and adventure, so why these days do we feel the need to mind fuck the audience every 5 minutes.

Moffat's 'Who' has been described as taking the show back to the 'scaring the kids behind the sofa' days of the original, but will an eight year old be able to follow this? Anyone want to beg to differ; scare it certainly will, but the plot???

I really want to give this show a chance, the Pirates epsiode looks like nod to old 'Who', but with this story arc abound, I'm not so keen on religeously following it... anyone who religeously followed 'Twin Peaks' will know what I mean.

In my opinion, young kids will do just fine. They're a lot more intelligent than we give them credit for. I find it's adults who don't like being made to think. Even so, it doesn't matter if one doesn't follow every last plot point. New DW can be enjoyed as pure entertainment - sort of like a roller-coaster ride. The pieces snap into place later - in your sleep mostly I find.

The Doctor gave the Silents a chance, true, but did the Silents understand what the Doctor was offering? I doubt it. The Doctor offered the Silents a chance to leave to absolve his conscience, because he knew they weren't going to take it.

How did the Doctor know they wouldn't take the hint? Simple. The Silents had no frelling clue that the Doctor was about to unleash genocide on them. The Silents weren't in any position to make an informed decision about the Doctor, his motives, and his capabilities. The Silents weren't at Grand Moff Tarkin levels of hubris ("Leave now? At our moment of triumph?") because they didn't have the necessary knowledge to make an informed decision. And the Doctor played on that -- he could make the offer, secure in the knowledge that it wouldn't be taken, and he could say later, "Well, I gave them an out. It's their own stupid fault they didn't take it."

There's been Silence in the Tardis. They're the ones who detonated the Tardis. So clearly they know all about him.

For those complaining about an arc, does anyone remember that old DW stories ran for sometimes 8 episodes? or more? You make it sound like this is new and goes against Doctor Who history.
