So June, 1987 was around the time we saw our first glimpse of the new Enterprise...

A new star trek series?
They can never get someone to replace Kirk! I'm outraged!!!
Who are they replacing him with anyway?? I hope it isn't a bald british guy. That would suck!

I first heard about it on Entertainment Tonight. They had a brief 30-second segement or so covering the official announcement from Paramount.

Didn't get my first look at the crew and the ship until I was thumbing through a May 1987 copy of Star magazine and there was this big double-page spread showing both publicity stills and shots from the first few epsidoes.

There's nothing like hearing about a new Star Trek series coming and the anticipation and speculation of wondering what it'll be like, who the characters are, and what kind of adventures they'll have. It's also interesting to see how the initial premise and concepts change as they refine it during pre-production...

I still like the article in the fan-published magazine Trek that speculated that since the Captain was bald he must be a deltan.

It was SO much harder back then..monthly or bi-monthly reports. Today its almost weekly for a new movie once production starts.

I remember seeing a ET piece that featured an interview with David Gerrold (sitting at a very mid-80's PC) talking about the new show.

That's the one. Oddly, Mary Hart doesn't look all that much different 25 years later...

Maybe the kids of today don't know.
Multiple Enterprises and captains and series and crews and whatnot are commonplace.

But at the time, the idea of Star Trek without Kirk and Spock and the original crew was heresy against doctrine.

In all my decades of fandom, the idea of a new Star Trek without TOS was the big biggest biggest big uproar I can recall.

I remember how very very hard it was for TNG to really earn their stripes, especially in that first season (oh boy).
You'd think us fans would be more openminded and willing, but there was vicious backlash against the "new generation", real divided camps.

Hard to imagine today, when we're all accustomed to yet another ship and captain and crew and series or movie or whatever incarnation comes along.

If TNG started the way it did back in '87, it wouldn't have lasted more than six eps today. Maybe less.

Sometimes patience pays off.

Unless you got a copy of the series bible that was floating around for sale more-or-less sub rosa from about March of '87 on....

Saw an article earlier stating the design was finalized in dec 8th, 1986, and appeared on the bible soon after. Appeared in the Fan club mag in June, and Starlog in July.
