The Office - Time to Wrap it Up?

So, Will Ferrell will be replacing Steve Carrell on The Office, apparantly. Don't know if this will keep me watching or not. Honestly have not been laughing as much this season as I have watching earlier seasons of this show. Maybe it's time to wrap this show up - use Ferrell the rest of this season, have him totally screw things up and run the Scranton office out of business and just be done with it.

Thoughts?

The replacement for Steve Carell might be able to give it a lease of life, but I can't imagine the dynamic will change too much. It still makes me chuckle but it's definitely not as good anymore. Maybe it would be best to end it with Michael getting his happy ending.

It'll probably go on way too long (much like "The Simpsons") to the point where by the time it ends most people will agree it is far past its prime and hasn't been worth watching for awhile. Personally, I think it'll be done for me once Carrell leaves. I'll check out a few Farrell episodes out of curiosity, though.

For me, just about the only thing that has made "The Office" still worth watching over the past two mostly unfunny, disappointing seasons has been the Michael and Holly story line (I love the Holly character). It looks like that will be wrapped up in the next few episodes. Once the two of them have checked out of the show, I'm ready to do the same.

The classy thing for the producers to do would be end this show after one more season, but I'm afraid it'll go on much longer. Too many shows get run into the ground because people just can't bring themselves to quit while they're ahead like Jerry Seinfeld and Ricky Gervais did.

I heard Ferrell's only guest starring in 4 episodes or something, which are overlapping with Carell's final shows. Has that changed? Is he tagged to return in the fall now?

I'd like to see at least one more season, mostly out of curiosity. It definitely peaked in season 2 and has been very hit-miss in the last few years, but when it's good, and they let the humour come from the characters rather than from wacky situations, it's still very good. The ending to last night's episode had me all choked up.

I think they can still pull off the show sans Carell, but I'd rather not just see him replaced with Ferrell or another semi-big-name screwball type guy.

Ferrell is only in four episodes because he specifically requested to be and the show has already been picked up for another season. I'm hoping they give some other characters room to shine...

I still love The Office. It might not be *quite* as good as S3 but I have always loved it. I don't get the people who say it's horrible now. I still laugh. I still care. And I won't even mind the departure of Michael. For me it's about all the supporting characters, it's not the Michael Scott show at all.

I haven't really watched since early last season, but I caught a few minutes of one the other week. I saw Holly was back and they kept talking about having sex in the office... whatever...
I may watch when Will Farrell starts, but I have a feeling that he'll basically be the same character he plays in (almost) every single movie.

I am through watching in four more episodes when Michael leaves. It seems like a reasonable ending point for me. The only other thing I would like to see is a resolution to the Erin/Andy storyline and maybe Dwight/Angela. But I'm not watching another season or three for those to happen. The last season of the show I truly enjoyed week to week was season four. Enough is enough.

I thought the new guy in season 8 is going to be the actor who played Jack Donaghy's G.E nemesis in 30 Rock for a few seasons played by Will Arnet?

NBC should end the show with Steve leaving but there sitcom night is in a total mess so they will milk it for every last $$$.

wHY is he leaveing his own show ?

$$$

It's more that he's made a lot of money from the show, and he really wants to start making more movies. The shooting schedule of television really crimps his ability to do that. And, really, after seven years, he's probably a bit bored. I don't blame him.

And, yes, Ferrell is only appearing in the final four episodes this season, as part of the transition. The replacement for Michael Scott is still a closely guarded secret. (Which makes me think that it's an internal promotion.)

I heard the same thing. The Ferrall thing is a temporary "sweeps" stunt. Then, rumor has it, Will Arnett (Gob on Arrested Development) will be the new boss.

Count me as one of those who think the show has seen better days. That being said, it's not like it's horrible now, by any means. A few of the recent episodes were quite enjoyable. I was a little worried about next season, but if Will Arnett is on the show, then I have hope for next season being good. Arnett, like Carrell and Ferrell, really only plays one character, but I really do like the Gob/Devon Banks/Steve Wilde, with only slight variations on each character. However, I do really like Will Arnett and his take on those characters, so I'm interested in seeing what he brings to The Office.

The Office is well past its freshness date and they should pack it in. It used to find the humor in real- or nearly real-life situations, but after three seasons the characters started getting too eccentric, the situations too intentionally absurd. The realistic authority-figure characters were reduced to ineffectual dopes, so the Michael character could go way too far overboard. The factor of documentary realism that the original version had was lost long ago. These characters don't act like real people anymore. An example:

The sprinkler system is going off, computers are being soaked, file drawers are open, records and paperwork being destroyed. Think of that happening at your work: It would be panic mode. And everybody just stands around grinning like idiots as their office is ruined.

I like Amy Ryan a lot, but the Holly character just seems like she's contrived to be Michael's perfect mate. She just doesn't ring true.
