What would you BUY if someone handed you a ton of money?

It's funny you mention your hotel idea, AS. I was talking with a friend not too long ago about a somewhat similar idea. As I think you know, The Hubby and I have become sort of addicted to cruise vacations over the past several years. Well, there was a rumor a few months ago that our favored cruise line was decommissioning one of their smaller ships (we now know she's actually just being transferred to a European sister company).

My Trekkie-Cruisie friend and I were musing that it would be fun to buy the little girl and refit her in an all-Trek theme. We figured, since she only carries about 620 passengers, we might just be able to fill her with fellow Trekkie Cruisers. :p

When we sailed on her sister ship a few years ago, I actually noticed that space currently known as the "Tahitian Lounge" would make an ideal "Ten Forward" with her panoramic 180 degree forward facing windows, bar along the aft bulkhead and, perhaps not coincidental, location on deck ten forward. :mallory:

I like where I'm living so rather than buy a bigger house I'd extend my current house as much as local by-laws would allow me to. I'd invest the leftover money and live off the interest. It would be comforting to know that my kids won't rack up a huge debt when they go to university and that I could help them get on the property ladder. I'd also have far more pets than I have now as I'd have the space and the money for them. Since I wouldn't have to worry about earning a living I'd keep myself busy with volunteer work.

AS, I want to visit your hotel, and I'd certainly take a cruise on your ship, TM!

Hey TrekkieMonster... maybe we should combine our two ideas. I could do the hotel and your cruise ship could dock at my hotel. We could even expand and create a Star Trek resort with golf course, spa and theme park. We could even throw in some beach front condos modeled after Risa.

Never been on a cruise for various reasons but if you started this, i'm so there!

Also, ASTROSMURF, count me in for a week at your hotel!!!

If I received a large amount of money I would use it to pay bills.

Oh, and to buy a serious shitload of baseball gear.

I think I'd even move to NYC if I could.

If I may make a suggestion, you should reserve the TOS Admiral's Suite, complete with desk area, lounge and rotating vanity. The Voyager Captain's Suite might also be appealing to you as well. And when you get a minute from your convention activities or Promenade shopping, be sure to stop by our full scale mock-up of a DS-9 Runabout or have dinner at Quarks. Our Bridge Tour, featuring seven command centers, is amazing as well. And for your evening pleasure, beam over to the Holodeck theater for a big screen viewing of your favorite Trek movie or episode. A new selection is shown every night. You can also dance the night away at Vic's or have a quiet drink while looking at the stars in the Ten-Forward Lounge or assimilate your next date at the Borg Techno Bar.

I would buy a house in the French Quarter, accompanying furnishings and a Mercedes McLaren SLR 722.

...and flying lessons.

How much money are we talking about anyway? I need a frame of reference here!

If you assume the weight of a single bill in US currency is 1 gram, there are 907,184.74 grams in a US or short ton (2k lbs) and 1,016,000 grams in a standard ton (1k kg).

Using $100 bills, there would be $90,718,474 in a short ton and $101,600,000 in a standard ton.

How's that for a frame of reference? ;)

That's a given but the French Quarter is some of the highest land in the city so I wouldn't be worried about that.

I like it, I like it. I'm picturing somewhere in the Bahamas.

Oh, give me 10 minutes with you and I'd have you hooked. Cruising is my own personal answer to crack. :p

Okay, this is sounding so good ..., it's a little scary. :D

I would make movies.

Why am I now surprised? :p And, of course, I'd watch them. Faithfully. Every one. Even the odd numbered ones.

Let's just say someone hands you a ton of money. You don't need it to pay your bills or use it for any reason other than to mega splurge. What would you buy?

I've always thought about how cool it would be to actually buy, own and operate a movie theater. Just a small one, to have intimate showings of great great movies. Maybe run a 'theme' month or something like that. Be able to show independent films, whatever. I would LOVE that.

What about you? What would you buy with your money?

You said we get a ton of money. I was curious to know how much that would be. Here at answers.com 1 pound of 100 dollar bills is estimated at $45,400. Multiplying that by 2000 lbs gives us $90.8 million.

Yea, I could play with this.

I would buy a nice piece of land and have a castle complete with wall and drawbridge built. If I'm gonna spend, it's gonna be big.

with about $90 million dollars to play with, I will buy a yacht first. Something like the one below will set me back about $15MM.

And then I will spend about $5MM arming that thing to the teeth. I want electrified railings, automatic turrets (7.62mm minigun, rockets, and Mk1 Underwater Defense Fun), bullet proof glass, titanium plates, active/passive sonar, and a couple of torpedo tubes.

Not that I want to hunt down pirates, but I want to be able to sail the world being assured of my safety. I'll name the vessel "Serenity". (Too many Enterprises out there)

Then with the $70MM I have left, I will buy luxury condos in the following 15 cities in the world, in no particular order.

- Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore, Sydney, Venice, Cape Town, New York, Miami, Vegas, Vancouver, Shanghai, Valparaiso, Rio de Janeiro, Greece, and Dubai.

I estimate spending about $3MM per city, so I'll still have $25MM left. I'll invest the $25MM in a safe income based mutual fund (which would yield about 4% at worst) and live off of the fund income (about $1MM per year)

WHERE IS MY MONEY??
