The Event Season 1.5 *Spoilers*

I haven't seen a single episode of this, nor do I wish to, but I was interested in the thread.

I have been saying for years that there should be single-or double-season shows because, other than networks messing with the schedule and forcing shows into a massively long hiatus or changing the days and times its on, the writers' rooms are often incapable of keeping the writing good at a consistently high level for a decade. Smallville has suffered from it, Stargate SG1 suffered from it, certainly the L&O franchises suffered, and so on.

Fresh shows every two years would negate that. Another option, which would negate the long hiatus issue, is to have shorter "mid-season" seasons like Britain does, with shows that last 13 episodes per season, which would make them like miniseries, and keep everything fresh. That way they can make more shows and provide more variety.

Just my two cents. I now return you to your irregularly scheduled programming.

I saw the new episode last night. I thought it was pretty good. The Aliens are from NGC253, which is a galaxy near ours, so not AU humans.

Looks like the they lived on our planet long ago then went to their world in NGC253. Now that world is becoming uninhabitable. Thomas wants to bring them all back to Earth but it seems as a civilazation they were morally bound not to interfere with Earth's population. I think we are there there children in some way.

Where did they say they used to live on our world?

And I must say, this show got infinitely better in the haitus.

I liked the new episodes. Very good!

Now I'm curious as to what exactly our relationship with the "non terrestrials" is. Are they an earlier evolution of humans from Earth who decided to move on to NGC 253 for whatever reason, and now are back, or did they seed life on Earth (and possibly elsewhere) all the way from their home galaxy in hopes of perpetuating the species, etc.?

Anyone watch this last night? I thought the back to back episodes were pretty good.

It was quite good. I was very pleasantly surprised. They got rid of all the extraneous crap that was dragging the show down (like the flashbacks) and focused on advancing the story in an exciting way.

If they can keep somewhat close to this level for the remainder of the season this will go from something I only watch when nothing else is on to something I actually look forward to. And that's when it will be canceled. ;)

I definitely enjoyed the return episode. I didn't even realize that they stopped the endless flashbacking, but I kinda forgot a lot about this show in the meantime. I am slightly disappointed they are just aliens from another planet. But hey, we're getting concrete answers!

It was mentioned in promos, not so much in this past episode. I will see if i can find a youtube link of the promos

Ok got it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IB0_d7t1PeM

(Sorry, I dont know what the Youtube embedd bb code is in this forum)

It clearly says it was once their planet and their taking it back.

So they are from a different planet and the promos make no sense? Good to know.

Too bad it wasn't this (supposedly, I haven't seen it yet) good from the beginning, there would have more viewers (it got a 1.4 demo and is DOA).

So is "the event" the aliens returning?

Also to the person that said "nothing better is on", watch Chicago Code.

I have been saying for years that there should be single-or double-season shows

The TV business model doesn't work that way. Any show that merits a second season. or a third, or a tenth, will get one as long as the ratings say so. Doesn't matter if the show was planned for X number of seasons. The plan will change to follow the money.

The only measure of whether the writers are burnt out that counts is the ratings. When the audience doesn't like what they produce, the ratings will tell them.

Fresh shows every two years would negate that.

There are fresh shows every year in September. Most of them suck. How would your plan prevent the yearly suckitude?

None of this has anything to do with The Event anyway - the problem with that show is that there never was a show to begin with, just a marketing campaign.

Exactly. People were willing to give a show a try, the show was a mess. If they thought it out some more it could have been a hit.

I guess I pretty much agree with that review. As it turns out, "the Event" is just a big alien invasion. How... umm... fresh and original. So why do I need to keep watching? If I wanted to watch a show about a cliched alien invasion with characters I don't care about, I'd still be watching V.

Yeah I was hoping the aliens needed our help to get home, or that the event was not caused by the aliens, but they knew of it, or they came and seemed to be invading, but they were really just helping us survive on a new Earth after something happens to change the planet.

The first episode is 39:38 minutes, that's insanely short. I like how when the president was talking in the beginning everyone was sitting down when he was standing, that's completely unreal in the situation room. You think the writers would know that. And a giantic transporter no one can see from satellites? The thing is massive.

"Alien Invasion Foiled by 10 year old girl using Google Earth"

:p

The thing I don't get about this series... Ok, well there's multiple things. It doesn't really seem like Jason Ritter's character has much purpose in the storyline right now. He found his girlfriend, he rescued his girlfriend's sister, and now he's left his girlfriend. The main focus since the first couple minutes of the pilot was finding the girlfriend and his connection there.

Apparently Hal Holbrook's character (and what's with the weird diving future timeline power?) will meet up with him for some revenge at ruining his plans I guess.

The irritating thing is knowing that the most interesting image from the preview NBC's running for the second half of this season is seeing the Washington Monument crumbling down and believing that it's probably going to happen in like the last 10 mins of the final episode of the season(series) and that'll be it for the show.

I think they should reboot the show again next season and call it "The Arrival" and have it just be the aliens showign up and having a civil war on Earth. That would be be somewhat interesting.

That's what Brannon Braga wanted to o with his "Threshold" show. Every season he'd change the title to reflect the changes from "Threshold" to "Foothold" and stuff.

I know, and I think it's normally a stupid idea, however the ratings for The Event suck, so if they want, just try something new again.

There's nothing that's been said that contradicts the promos yet. Them being from the galaxy NGC-253 doesn't preclude them from...

a) Having visited us in the past and helped us build such monuments as the pyramids of Egypt and the Inca city of Machu Picchu, as another promo suggested. Perhaps they were built in preparation for their future arrival.

b) Having first evolved on Earth but left long ago and resettled in the Sculptor Galaxy, now returning.

c) Having evolved there but seeding our planet with their genetic material and giving rise to humankind.

The fact that some of them feel obligated to protect us and that they share 99% of our genetic material suggests a relationship.

Also to the person that said "nothing better is on", watch Chicago Code.
I do watch 'The Chicago Code,' it's a great show. I DVR'd it last night. But since it only started a month ago and never conflicted with 'The Event' until now, that wasn't what I was referring to when I said I used to only watch 'The Event' if there was nothing else on.

Was Layla's mom an alien too? the implication in the Dad's speech was Layla was a full alien not a hybrid.

I'm paraphrasing but from what I remember the dad said, "we came here 60 years ago and were imprisoned. Some of us escaped, I met your mother and bla bla bla." so it suggests to me that the mom was from Earth. I think your right that they are originally from Earth. If that is true, then they must be an older version of humans that evolved and were able to develop space flight and then traveled to NGC253. The only other explanation is that they came from NGC253 and came to Earth sometime after the Dino's, but before Humans, then for some reason left Earth and went back to their galaxy, then once again came back to Earth. That's a little much though. The only other explanation is that they are frackin Cylons.

That's the only other explanation? The stupidity of the show, I'm sure they can make some BS up that we would roll our eyes at. :)

They have wormholes, they can travel through space and time.
