Your first thought in the morning

"I feel I have no meaning, now I've lost my purple flapjack."

This morning I spent my first few moments debating whether or not to take my car in for an oil change today.

Usually a groan or "Oh, God" (or oh other profanity). Sometimes, "It's not time to get up yet, kitties."

"I'm awake! F***! Now I have to do stuff." :(

Alternatively, on weekends: "I'm awake! Meh, I'll just go back to sleep." :)

I once had a theory that I only wake up because I get bored of sleeping. That theory got me through the best years of my life.

/.../ nowadays my cat is usually nice enough to climb up on my face or chest and start stamping her paws back and forth to wake me up to feed her.
My kitten is taking on a bit more weight than she should -'neutralized' cats have a tendency to not be able to self-administer their food-intake very well. I'm dreading this very situation; waking up by the paws of a hungry cat! -can't you feed them before bed? -or is it just a naive dream of mine that that'll keep the cat out of my hair in 'the morning'?

Well, yeah, I could have gotten her used to feeding before bed, but I just got in the habit of feeding her when I woke up, and she's really a stickler for keeping on a timetable apparently. It's no big deal though, and if I want to sleep in I can just close the door to my room and lock her out (although she'll paw at the door and loudly meow then).

It's the first cat I've had since I was a kid, and the first that I've raised from a kitten (she just turned one), so I'm still learning the tricks.

That video is hilarious. That's exactly what she does, minus the baseball bat. ;)

We just leave food out for our cat. Are we not supposed to do that? Even though he's not hungry, he still bothers me in the morning by stepping all over my face like it's nothing.

I leave dry food and water for her all day, and then feed her wet food twice a day in the morning and evening. That's what the vet recommended for Lilly because of her age and (normal) weight, but it might be different depending on the age and weight of your cat and whether it's indoor or outdoor.

I'm new to this though, so don't rely on my advice. :)

I usually have very vivid dreams in the early morning, so my first thoughts generally involve the last dream I had.

Yesterday I was dreaming that I had just been in a parade, and people kept coming up to congratulate me, except that the people were actually living dolls. At the very end, I was talking to 3 Ken dolls, and one just kept repeating over and over "Best time ever."

Yeah, we tried giving him wet food but he rejects anything except for his dry food. Which is good I suppose. He's actually not that much older than Lilly ... he's about a year and a half now.

Dry food is so much easier to deal with. I never give my cat wet food. My last cat ate wet food and it ended up making him overweight. And once you introduce them to wet food, they will not want to stop eating it. I'm not even going to let my current cat try wet food.

That said, my cat is still super picky. She will only eat "fresh food." So even though she has a full bowl of food right now, if she has already eaten a bite or two, she will not come back to it later. She expects fresh food every time.

This morning...

Shall I move? Shall I open my eyes? No. I'm going to just lay here completely still for a few minutes. I have no idea what time it is with my face under the covers like this. It could be the middle of the night, or it could be really late morning. And it's Saturday, so I don't suppose it matters, so I'm just going to lay like this.

And I'm laying in this position again, and it's so comfortable. Why can I not find this position when I'm falling asleep? My elbow is always digging into my ribs when I try. Let me see if I can remember how everything is positioned.

Since you're not feeding her wet food, make sure she's drinking a lot of water. Cats who eat dry food are much more susceptible to serious urinary/kidney problems.

Oh, trust me, first thing she does after bugging me for food is jump on the bathroom sink and then stare at me until I turn on the faucet for her. This happens several times a day. She drinks plenty.
