just going to say that, it was nostalgia on their part...

imagine in 70 years we, USA, are ruthlessly conquered and enslaved then brutally ruled by say the Sammarinese (God forbid!) and later decide to rebel against the itallic oppressors, i would make our first rebel warship a "USS" prefix in a nod to our late great grand old republic
