SGU CANCELLED!

SGU is trying to be serious character drama, written and produced by people who aren't comfortable doing serious character drama, people who would rather be doing action adventures. That's why it's so awful and why it has failed.
I've gotten the impression that the show runners themselves wanted to go in a different direction. It might not have been a Syfy directive.

ugh, no thanks. I've got 10 seasons worth of SG-1 DVDs for that...plus all of Atlantis.

Which of course shows that that format got 15 seasons of television (and could have got more had they stuck with it instead of wanting to change everything), while SG:U's new and different and gritty etc.. format barely got 2.

I would kill for another SG-1 style series.

SGU took too long to get good. By the time it started going anywhere, everyone had tuned out. Sad but true. It had a lot of potential but most of that potential was never realized. TV audiences are not patient.

What you fail to mention is that Atlantis, using your beloved format, was cancelled, likely for the same reasons that Universe has been.

The Stargate franchise, under the current leadership, is on its last legs. For the most part, it's a tired franchise, with repetitive elements. Even when TPTB decided to head down a different path (a nuBSG clone), the only people who continued to watch (diehard fans), for the most part, were unwilling to accept the new direction for a variety of reasons.

Frankly, Stargate should be given a prolonged repose...

^^ Could be wrong, but I thought that Atlantis was cancelled as MGM couldn't afford to produce both that and Universe?

I do agree though, after 17 seasons I think the franchise needs a rest. Sadly, given MGM's predicament, I suspect that we'll be seeing more sooner rather than later.

.
The producers decided to end Atlantis as they did not want to produce 2 shows at the same time again, and with the success of the SG1 dvds, thought transferring ATL to dvd movies would be a good move to keep it going.

Where do you get this from? I've never seen a quote where "The producers decided to end Atlantis."

They didn't - SG:A got cancelled; BUT at the same time MGM was pitching a new take on the franchise that SCIFI thought was worth a shot; so in true RDM & nuBSG cancellation type spin, they said:

"We've decided to end SG:A and go with a new take SG:U"

That said, SG:A was cancelled and would have been cancelled regardless of whether SG:U went forward or not.

The fact niether SG:A or SG:U were doing well enough in the ratings as far as SyFy was now concerned is most likely why they decided to end their involvement in any further new production with teh Stargate franchise.

But is it the direction they genuinely want to go, or just the one they're going because they think it's the popular route which will bring more ratings?

Yep.

MGM had not made a decision to greenlight SG:U at the time they cancelled SG:A; it was nothing but a pitch.

I figured that they liked what cable shows including BSG were doing and wanted to give it a try, but I don't know. Just because most fans were happy with the way Stargate was doesn't necessarily mean that the creators were also satisfied with it. They do seem to get pretty defensive when SGU is criticised, so that could suggest that they're genuinely passionate about the new direction. That's just my own take though. I should look up some interviews to see if there's anything about what motivated the change in direction.

Well, they have reasons to feel defensive.

It's one thing, and I suppose annoying enough, to be told as Ron Moore was "we hate the whole direction you've taken our beloved show."

But the Stargate producers are getting that from one group but also the message from some fans that "The direction you're going would be okay, but you suck at it."

As has been said, the main reason for cancelling Atlantis was because MGM thougth they could make more money off direct to dvd movies. They could have easily got another season or two from Atlantis. and then spun off a third Star Gate series, using the broad points of this format and I am confident such a series would have lasted longer the SG:U did.

My main point was that someone said they didnt want more of thsi format as they ahd all the dvds and I was responding by saying that the amount of dvds they have shows that the format was godo for producing long running Star Gate, something which SG:U's format is clearly not. And anotehr series in that general format would have been the best way to go.

These people have shown all the grace and intelligence of a crate of potatoes. He said on the blog that they are going to pursue SGU in every possible avenue even though it was cancelled. :rommie:

I haven't seen people this hard headed since Rick Berman and Brannon Braga. The arrogance is stupefying. I guess it's time to give up Stargate for dead.

Berman still had a contract and, I believe, some development money in the pipeline when Enterprise was cancelled - that's why he continued to work on Trek and specifically on that "Romulan war" movie. I've no idea whether Wright is in a similar position or not; for all we know he's packing up cardboard boxes this week. Or maybe not. Anyone know for sure?

I hope they finish off some plotlines (kill off Chloe, at least), but it sounds like they won’t, being cancelled in mid-season.

And the show was getting better, at least to me and others here.

The only good part is this means I have less reason than ever to have cable tv, since I don’t think there’s much left on SyFy to watch (I won’t call it “Skiffy” since the channel was better back then and doesn’t deserve the name anymore).

ETA: Wait! I still like Warehouse 13 and Eureka. But I’m more inclined to believe SyFY will screw with those shows even more until they’re unwatchable.

None of the story lines are finished, they have finished filming series two but it ends on a cliff hanger.
