SGU CANCELLED!

Filming for the 2nd season finale started on the week of November 8th, and it ends in a cliff-hanger:
http://www.gateworld.net/universe/s2/220.shtml

I think this and Caprica should serve as a notice to all future writers of sci-fi space dramas that ending your seasons in cliffhangers is NOT a good idea. From now on in these shows each season should be self contained and wrap up its inter-season arcs by the season finale.

Personally I think you maybe missing the lesson here.

This isn't about ...cliffhangers.
It's about pacing...
Good writing...
Good characters...
Good drama as opposed to ...fake drama...

oh...and action too. That's why no one should be surprised at the cancellation and this isn't the end of the Franchise not by a long shot.

Gutted as I think it was finally finding its feet, oh well no more Stargate anymore:(

Re: Acheivement Unlocked: Dead Franchise Status obtained (?)

Joe Mallozzi stated on his blog that SGU ending would make it hard to get any DVD films made.

Of course, he's a little biased, but it might be true.

More than you know.
What he might be saying...is that it would be hard to get any DVD films made under him and the current producers. Obviously SyFy is making some stiff but good decisions. They've trusted the current producers and Brad Wright just drove Atlantis into the ground and pitched a no hitter for the third series. His job maybe on the line.

I'm surprised that the fans think this is the end.
The Bankruptcy report made a concerted effort to put aside money for another series and two DVD movies.

They obviously know that there is a brand name here that may be fledgling but real nonetheless.

The brand name may be there, but it appears that the fans aren't, not in sufficient numbers to keep a Networked-Stargate TV show alive with the current measurement system used for ratings.

You know...I can't say you're wrong.
That whole product placement thing they were talking about on Gateworld may be a great idea but clearlly it wasn't just the system....the fans evident didn't like the show...they said so at the conventions, rallied a slur campaign and they kinda...ignored them....Now maybe that was just towing the company line but we need damage control right now.

I've gotta say, Incursion I & II were fracking awful, probably (for me anyway :p) the most lacklustre season finale episodes in Stargate history, they killed all momentum leading into the end of Season 1.

Incursion - sounds like a couple of exciting episodes don't they? They weren't. The LA weren't much cop either and Robert Knepper was wasted in his role.

No its done im afraid! Space based sci fi is as good as done due to the cost and the lack of viewers.

Reality shows are the current "in" thing and will continue to be so as they are successful in terms of ratings and therefore money. Also a lot cheaper to make. Thank God for dvds!

No reshoots, no. Perhaps at best we'll get a text slide on a black screen revealing their ultimate fate:

"Young never remarried."

"He and Rush adopted four blue aliens and celebrated their 39th episode together last week."

"The Destiny crew never returned home."

Reality shows were in eight years ago when Firefly was... bad example. Reality shows were in seven years ago when BSG and Atlantis took off.

True but you can only watch the same DVD's over and over again before you get bored with them. With this and Supernatural finishing this year there will be nothing left for me to watch anymore.

Well, there goes the only real space show in Scifi on TV, and the only shot Stargate had to grow into something with some legs.

Everybody who did nothing but bitch and cry about how offensive it was because SGU required an attention span can go back to playing with their SG-1 action figgers.

Between this, the Americanized Being Human remake, and the ever-increasing amounts of wrestling on the schedule, not sure why I should bother keeping SyFy. W13, I suppose, although that isn't exactly appointment television.

Can't believe the cast and crew had to learn about it online. Classy, SyFy, classy.

Re: Acheivement Unlocked: Dead Franchise Status obtained (?)

Perhaps. I think it needs to take a long break and/or be rebooted. Becoming a movie franchise like Star Trek has switched to would be ideal I think but that probably won't happen. Some direct to dvd movies maybe. It wouldn't be good, I think, to jump to a new series. Also, isn't MGM bankrupt? This could very well be the last Stargate.
IIRC MGM made special provisions for Stargate in its new budget.

Anyway, if they do pull a reboot they should do it nuTrek style keeping the old universe canonically intact.

Maybe have it something to do with a new Quantum Mirror or another Reality Drive.
