Anyone here think the moon landings were faked?

I'm wondering what kind of political consequences those truthers are drawing from their conviction, if any. I mean, a government staging a gigantic terror attack killing thousands of its citizens, causing countless billions of dollars in damage and starting multiple foreign wars as a result that cost even more thousands of lives and trillions of dollars is kind of a big deal, isn't it? Considering that, those 27% are pretty quiet. I would be fucking angry if I believed that.

I read a psychological paper once about conspiracy theories. It's the result of some people having a problem with facing reality. It's a form of escapism, so to speak. Your brain can't comprehend what happened, so you invent a conspiracy theory in your mind to make sense of it all. Some things just don't make sense because you don't know all the facts. And some decisions simply don't make sense because, yeah well, humans made them. And your mind doesn't like it when things don't make sense, especially when it has a huge emotional impact.

Someone who suddenly commits suicide for no apparent reason just must have been murdered, for example.

9/11 must have been an inside job. The Twin Towers were brought down by additional explosive charges. The Pentagon was hit by a missile. There was no flight UA 93. Etc...

Kennedy's assassination was a CIA plot.

And so on.

It's when the notions "someone must be to blame" and "if it's too obvious it can't be right" get together. It's also the dangerous mix of "common sense" with "half knowledge".

I tend to place conspiracy theorists in the same area as alien abduction 'victims'. People are just attracted to something more glamorous than reality.

A bunch of dumb muslims are manipulated into hijacking four aircraft and causing mass destruction? Can't possibly be true. Airport security isn't that lax. It can't be that easy. It can't possibly be that easy. The reality of course is that some things are much easier ONE TIME than ever again. There are countless examples, especially in wartime, of how a few people did something audacious but somehow because it was American planes flying into American buildings? It couldn't be that easy. The alternative is much more glamorous.

Same with the Moon landings, although more tricky because there were multiple landings. Ignore the decades of work that built up to them. Pick one and say it couldn't possibly be that easy. The alternative is much more glamorous.

Most of those probably don't, but they replied with "Yeah, sure." for the heck of it.

It's like when people get asked if they believe Earth is a flat disc.

I just read recently that there are 3,500 members in the Flat Earth Society.

I hypothesize that many of those members don't for one second believe in a flat earth. It's a joke and they are in on it. That's how I sleep well at night knowing that 3,500 human beings are actual members of a "Flat Earth Society".

Also, conspiracy theorists like to pat themselves on the back for being clever enough to suss out THE TRUTH. We thickos simply believe what we're told, see. Unlike those clever, clever conspiracy theorists.

My Dad is a hardcore 9/11 truther. He is one of the most brilliant people I know, but for fuck's sake, he believes that crap completely. If you come up with ANY evidence whatsoever that debunks the conspiracy, well, you're just a rube who believes the government's official line. We had a huge argument about it the other day. Ugh.

I don't believe the moon landings were faked, I don't believe that 9/11 was a secret plot by our government, but I do think there was more to JFK's murder than what was reported in the Warren Commission. I don't think it was a large governement conspiracy like as was portrayed in the stone movie, but I do think there was a second gunman. Too many witnesses said that they heard shots coming from the grassy knoll. There's no way that Oswald could get off three shots with the type of weapon he had in the time alloted and there is no way that one bullet could create all those wounds.I think the commission already had their minds made up to oswald's guilt before the investigation and their sloppiness has helped fuel the conspiracy theorists.

I found a fascinating special on YouTube about who they think really killed JFK, and they got compelling evidence.

They even showed what I had never seen before, because television specials I had seen always censored it: JFK's head actually gitting hit with the bullet and blowing up. It;'s not at the angle or area where the reports aid he was hit, and his head, afterward where it was struck, looked nothing like the photo.

"The Men Who Killed Kennedy"

and it doesn't involve aliens.

There's even a wacky theory that the bloody driver of the limo JFK was in turned around and shot him!!!
I'm not kidding.

Honestly, with the amount of studies related to the Kennedy assassination and really crappy evidence that is easily debunked that suggests otherwise (such as the audiotape with the car backfire people thought was gunfire), I think it's easier to be a 9/11 truther.

Even witness testimony is useless at this point. Provided that they were actually there, people remember many things they've backfilled from other sources. It's why witnesses are so unreliable. Justice Stevens said he remembers Babe Ruth calling the famous homerun shot. Even Babe Ruth apparently admitted he did no such thing (although he liked to say he did because he liked drama).
