Huh? The dude added his own effects to one episode just for fun. And he says he's pretty much finished. So his "track record" seems to be just fine.

I expect exactly ZERO to come out of this project, but on a happy note, there is actually some minor news in the STNG forum I posted about the studio efforts on STNG:Remastered.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, I've been slaving a way at this for fun, nothing more...
I encourage you to not watch it, that way I don't have to hear more of your snarky remarks.![]()

The episode shouldn't be a huge shocker... "Q Who".
I'm compositing in the effects sequences now, shouldn't be to much longer...
Hmm ok just looked back on the thread, and its just basically new FX inserted into the episode? At what resolution/aspect ratio? Its not really a remastering, its just new FX..don't see how it'll look much better if its at the same res. Have you thought of using FCP to up-res? Out of curiosity...how available are tools CBS Digital used to clean up the prints(Autodesk Combustion I believe).

You seem to have a lot of assumptions, most of which are inaccurate. I have yet to release exact details about what the project is or what it entails. You act as if I know nothing about film/video. Do you need to see my credentials? I have a silly piece of paper that says I have a degree in just that. I'm a film-maker, television station employee, and a veteran Star Trek fan film producer. Is that not good enough?
I'll try to answer your questions, but I'd appreciate it if you weren't so critical of a video you haven't even seen yet...The video has been up-converted and touched up. All of my new effects have been rendered at 1280×720 (720p). Since I don't have access to the original film stock I can't really do much more than that, obviously. I'm not entirely sure on what CBS did for TOS:R, but seeing as how they had all original film stock, why would they need to worry about up-converting. The film image would have been more detailed than a 480i, no up-conversion needed. Cleaning up the film, on the other hand, is a completely different beast.
How about you try and stop paying attention to this thread and not watch the final product, I'd rather not hear your "critique" once I post it. It seems like you've been critical of a small project that isn't even out yet, I can't imagine what you've got lined up to say once it's in the public eye. I'd rather not talk about this again, it's a waste of time and precious internet space.

I didn't think I was "overly" critical..and I'm still waiting for projects like "ST:Re-animated" (lol) so excuse me for being skeptical, but of course I'll watch the project! If nothing else, to see what a small scale remastering could bring and what the studio is missing unless they decide to actually get off their collective studio asses and produce it.
As for TOS-R I understand that hardware up-converting is better than software up-converting (I'm not an expert, just an interested party with a rather minor background in graphic arts). They transferred the film stock to digital tape using a state-of-the-art digital printer/scanner. They produced a standard def and 16:9 version from this.I realize you don't have such resources, but if your project can look good, I'm anxious to see the results. I would also be willing to write the studio to call attention to what can be done and that there is a market for it. I WILL NOT buy STNG in its current DVD condition, I WILL buy a bluray HD version however.

I agree about TNG on DVD, the video transfer was the worst I've ever seen. I'm having a hell of a time trying to get the colors and levels to come out looking descent on Q Who, the first 2 seasons of TNG are very bland and "washed" with light, lacking in both color and contrast. Either the video transfer is absolutely horrendous (I'd love to get my hands on the original negatives) or the production crew just hadn't learned how to light the set yet. I always get a kick out of seeing them try to flag out the light reflection on the back LCARS stations, it looks terrible if you catch it. Someone once asked me why black construction paper was covering the display, lol. Also, they hadn't quite got the backlight on the stations down yet, they were very dim, often times they barely look on.
i thought they redid those with a tarted up enterprise for Generations
