"TNG" Remastered

Don't be too hard on yourself.

I think it is pretty impressive! Especially considering you put it all together in a week's time. :techman:

It definitely puts forth the argument that TNG could be Remastered despite what Paramount has thus far suggested.

Well, I watched the first 10 minutes, then after that the video kept freezing and whenever I reloaded the page, would only play for a minute before freezing again. Dunno if thats on my end or not though.

I will say this from what I saw: Ensign Gomez was hot!

Also, I liked the lighting in the scenes I saw, but I can't help but be turned off by the models. I know everyone can't have access too/make the best around (and even if they do, have the power to render them) but it just takes *me* out of the project probably because I try to make high quality meshes (emphasis on the try due to me not actually having made a decent mesh, not emphasis due to some form of put down).

I'll check back later to see if I can load the latter part of the ep, as I look forward to seeing how you handled the Borg pursuit/regeneration shot, plus "their carving us up like a roast." ;)

I actually kept the model shot of the carving, and the regeneration. Why change perfection?

Fair enough man, that cutting beam shot is pretty impressive. But please, don't let my words dissuade you from keeping this up/improving it. I was too harsh in my initial post, and for that im sorry. Keep at it, rework shots and improve upon what you've done. I wouldnt mind taking a stab at something like this myself one day when I have the time and talent to do so.

As for taking it down, yes, I can see how that might cause an issue, but I don't see how putting up a compilation of FX shots you've done could get you in any legal troubles. Plus that way, its really showing off the work you've done.

Again, im sorry for coming off harsh, I do it because I care :p and would really really love to see some more work like this and see you push the levels of what can be done.

Hm, why are the camera angles totally different?

Obviously they didn't have the tools of a 3D world back then, so I animated the camera more rather than having a static shot.
No offense, but that's the thing I really hope they avoid when they do a remastered version of TNG. Just keep everything as it is, in higher resolution.

So we could see the same 4 effects shots over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again? No thank you. The reason we saw EoF shots for 7 years was because they didn't have the budget to go all crazy every episode. If they had the ability to make it look good then it would look good.

Also, did I miss the memo that the saucer impulse engines would be retconned to always be on? I'm not saying I don't like it...and it makes sense...but it seems like ever since TaTV it's just been the way it was.

How did you just make it through the show? :wtf:

They also won't have the budget to go crazy on every remastered episode whilst making it look good at the same time. Think about it.

The project has been pulled from public facing YouTube pages. To the few (Potemkin_Prod, I hear yah bro), thanks for the support! I had a lot of fun working on this, I'm glad you were able to enjoy it.

Seriously man, make a showreel of all the FX shots. You'll be safe with that.

I watched about 30 minutes of it (real life interrupted) and I just wanted to had a few points. First I appreciate the time and effort you took (in doing something I have absolutely no skill set in at all). I did like (for the most part) the work you did in lighting up the shots, though this episode is probably the episode I would keep as dark as possible to fir the tone of the show. As for the fx shots (Again have no skill whatsoever) but on to a few comments. I don't think even if they do redo TNG that we will ever see that type of cube again. I just think they would use the newer CGI style model then the original design. So your mesh didn't bother me at all, in that aspect. As for the fx shots layout (which to me is far more important personally, from a design point of view, then final quality of effects). In general (with a few exceptions) prefer not messing two much with original shots, but am all for being creative (with in the same style) for when TNG either completely recycled shots or modified existing shots with a bit of new material. So for the first Borg shots I would have tried (again I couldn't no skill) to mirror closer to the original design. But other wise the beams, I actually liked really well, and a lot of the other layout elements I liked.

My hats off to you, for doing what many of us never have the balls to do, putting forth your vision and letting us harp on it. Thanks.

"This video is private."

Great, that's like advertising happy hour at 6pm in a bar and then closing it at 5 :p

It was the 80s and it was expensive. Now, it's not as expensive.

If all they had to do were the effects, sure...they could probably afford to blow through a lot of alternate shots, but that's not all they have to do.

The budget and time frame CBS Digital worked on to get TOS finished was quite limited, and they had the original film to work with. Next Generation is going to be a completely different beast, and far more expensive to 'reproduce'. All the original film would need to be scanned, re-edited, and put back together with the original elements. They're going to have to reuse shots...or the project will never happen.

I'm not saying do a totally new fx shot for every fx shot...just not use the same 6 or so we got in TNG ad nauseum.

Color me disappointed. I was quite looking forward to seeing this and now it's been taken down? All I get from the link posted is "This video is private."

Was this a choice by Picard_Alpha, or did YouTube shut it down automatically?

I mean, I guess its one thing if you took it down to avoid any kind of legal trouble, but if you removed it because a bunch of haters got you down, well, I hate to say it but you kind of open yourself up to that when you do something like this. And the haters are always louder than the ones who love you. "I know Trekkies, they love to complain about everything..."

Here's hoping those of us who weren't around to catch it on Youtube will get an opportunity to watch the whole thing at some point :techman: Maybe a password-protected download version?

I couldn't get the whole thing to load on youtube but I enjoyed your alternative take on the titles and the colour grade for the most part, some of it was still a tad dark.

The opening scene for example was a vast improvement with the new grade, though I did feel some of the bridge scenes were overly bright and it would have been nice if you'd been able to push the uniform colours more in line with how they appear in the later seasons.

The CG shots were a mixed bag, so congratulations your on par with CBS digital ;)

2. I wasn't spoiled by modern shows not rehashing the same shots 3 times per show. It was the 80s and it was expensive. Now, it's not as expensive.

I stopped counting how many times Stargate and other shows re-used the same FX shot, for example the flyby of the Deadalus in hyperspace, or the same shot of Atlantis every time. The same shot of the Stargate opening every single time, etc...

Rats! I wish I had watched this over the weekend before it was pulled. It looked like a really fun project!
