Why do people criticise ST so much ?

I guess that virtually everybody registered on these forums is a ST fan. This being the case why do we spend so much time criticising it. I know that ST is not perfect but to read a lot of the posts on here you might think that you were reading a "I Hate Star Trek" forum.

Any opinions?

For the record I like all the series and all the films, so there.

I can usually find something I dislike even about my favourite shows. But I think if ppl are fans of one specific Trek they like to mock the others.

As for people who don't like Trek at all. They are obviously just simple minded and can only cope with reality TV and teen dramas.

I understand where the OP is coming from, though, because I've noticed an awful lot of negativity here.

I genuinely dislike TOS. It's hammy acted, and has poorly developed characters. The 24th century Treks were richer and had better storylines, as well as top-notch acting. Sir Patrick Stewart, Avery Brooks, Nana Visitor and Robert Picardo were by a light year the best actors in the 24th century Trek, better than any TOS cast member lol.

I think a lot of the perceived negativity is coming from people being nitpicky. It's one thing to say you don't like something and way it's another thing to fly into nerd rages over it and beat people over the head because they do like something. There's a fine line between being analytical and just overly critical. What I don't like is people getting up in arms over plotholes or inconsistencies who seem to forget this is written by humans so there's bound to be some errors and forgetfulness. Art is not perfect.

Star Trek is in the hands of a corporation that ultimately must act in a rational, money-motivated way to please its shareholders, and if quality is the way to make money from Star Trek (and I'd say overall, that's true) then quality is what we get.

Star Wars is in the hands of a hack who owns his own company outright and he can make as big a catastrope as he pleases. No shareholders, nobody to rein him in or fire his fat, incompetent ass and hire someone better. Star Wars is doomed to mediocrity till George Lucas croaks but Star Trek has been reborn after a little creative bobble (VOY, ENT). God bless the almighty dollar!

I have a strange ringing in my head. It's like a thirteen-year-old arguing about who shot first or something. I can't quite make it all out, but I'm also hearing something about incest, and something about how much a movie trilogy's creator had planned ahead, and something about whether it was appropriate for teddy bears to be rampantly visible in the last one... it's all so damned confusing and unrelenting.

Now the ringing in my head is turning to something called a 'prequel trilogy', and... I... there's too much confusion... this is horrifying! So much animosity from people. This is a thousand times worse than the earlier issue, and a million times worse than Star Trek. I, I... I can't take this! So much arguing over such petty and irrelevant issues!

It's true in a way, because for many people, if you really like something, you're more likely to examine it and pick it apart. That's definitely true of me.

while I actually liked VOY, your overall point is sound. Once Lucas quit the union/guild and had a newbie direct Return of the Jedi, it became clear that SW just couldn't be as good. Letting one man run *everything* just doesn't work, especially one who has made it clear in interviews he doesn't care about pleasing fans (and certainly doesn't desparately need to make more money or else!). It's really too bad.


As for the OP about people here not liking Trek: Trek is very diverse with six TV series and eleven movies spread out over about forty years. I can understand why some might like say DS9 but not VOY, or like nuTrek but not Enterprise. I actually only like the three TNG-era shows, though I don't complain about the other products.

What's funny is that there are a few people on this board who really don't like Star Trek at all. I'm thinking of a few people in TNZ.

We inherited a tendency to look for flaws, then think of how to fix them. It apparently worked far better for survival than sitting around thinking how good the food supply and village's defenses are today. Thus the need to consciously concentrate on positivity/positive thinking, since its opposite comes so naturally to so many.

(Even as I write this, I'm thinking how I could re-word it to make it clearer, rather than just smiling about the fact that I am making a post.)
