Some people are trying way too hard here. Of course there's trying too hard, and then there's trying
way, way too hard.
+1 on Kerrigan being the most important character in the SC universe. And gee, y'think she might show up in the Zerg campaign?
And of course Selendis (the current Protoss Executor) is female too, and may, just may, feature in the Protoss campaign.
Christ, you could at least complain about something half-reasonable like the fact that the female units are nurses/taxi drivers for men who do the real fighting (of course this involves ignoring the Banshee unit) or that the female units have (some) sexualised soundbytes whereas the male units do not. The latter is, on paper, a half-reasonable complaint, but I can't seem to give a shit.
And It's no surprise that Blizzard borrowed heavily from
Firefly. The Terrans in the first game were basically cowboys too. Hell, you can look at the UED / Koprulu Sector thing as akin to the American North/South. It's not subtle: they used a Confederate flag for crissakes. And in the interim between the two titles, a phenomenal new IP comes along that fits in just about perfectly with what Blizzard is going for. So of course they borrowed from it. It's no different than what they did with
Aliens for the first game. But that's a little older and half of all games in existence have been modelled on
Aliens, so people don't notice that so much.
On to less wankery matters: the writing in SC2 is truly bizarre. For every three or four lines which are utterly banal, there's one which is fine and another which is great. And amidst the generally bland characterisation there are moments of what could've been compelling development if only we gave a shit. Regardless, the overall effect is disconcerting in much the same way as watching the
Star Wars prequels: there's too much money on the screen for this shit to sound as bad as it does.
