If chief Miles O'brien wasn't married

Do you think he would have gotten it together with Bashir. :cardie:

And if he did, how do you think it would have affected the show ?

Plus, if not Bashir. What about Kira or Dax.

No. Neither Bashir or O'Brien showed any romantic interest in other males. They were friends and that is all.

Anyway, given how little Keiko appear it was almost like he wasn't married. It might have been interesting if she were around more so we saw more of what a "ordinary" family was like.

Given it was the early-mid 1990s I don't think that TPTB would let it happen.

And if he did, how do you think it would have affected the show ?
No Mrs O'Brien or baby O'Briens, no Bashir and Ezri stuff. No Kira is carrying my baby stuff. No terrible Molly from the future episode. Religious groups sending endless complaints to Paramount to stop morally corrupting the children.

Plus, if not Bashir. What about Kira or Dax.
Doubt it. Kira is too abrasive and Dax might be a bit too young for him.

Agree with Jono.

O´Brien and Bashir were friends, they had a great male-friendship, but I could not imagine that this would ever have formed into a romantic relationship... married or not married.

Kira and Dax (no matter if Jadizia or Ezri) also not really fit to O´Brien in a romantic way. I doubt they would be O´Briens type, nor would he be their type.

QFT.

Tough as it is for slash fanficcers to accept, some people are actually heterosexual. ;)

Also QFT.

i think a more interesting couple would have been Garak and Martok.

Whose baby would Kira have been carrying then? Or would she have become a happy mommy of Shakaar's baby?

Thank the Prophets for O'Briens.

I think he might have ended up with Kira. We saw their chemistry while she was carrying their baby. True, that is what bought them together. But I could see if happening in other ways if Keiko is out of the picture.

I think they go well together.

I don't think they would ever have any kind of romantic/sexual interest in each other if the writers didn't shoehorn it into the carrying-O'Brien's-baby plot. For starters, I don't think he's her type at all, judging from anyone she's ever been actually involved with/attracted to.

Nah, if he wanted to hed have gone with Bashir no matter what Keiko thought. He did like Bashir just a bit better after all.

Before Odo, I might agree. But does she really have a type? Okay (sp?) Bariel and Shakkar are somewhat similar maybe. But Odo was completely different.

I just see them both as basically "simple needs, simple life" types. They are both very upfront and uncomplicated in how they approach things. That is my take on it anyway.

I normally don't delve into hypotheticals, especially after the fact, but trying to suggest O'Brien and Bashir could have gone gay and been in a relationship is about as far fetched as Kirk and Spock, or Kim and Paris......

I have no idea why anytime Star Trek makes two male characters be best friends, people have to jump on this notion that they must have been gay, or they could have been gay..... why can't they just be best friends and leave it at that?

Now I don't have anything against homosexuality or the like, but trying to go hypothetical in these possibilities after the shows are done, after all the episodes and character developments were made, is a flawed approach.

To go hypothetical in these type of ideas would mean not only wiping all we know of DS9 and trying to think of what 7 years worth of activities would have turned out like.... but you'd have to delve all the way back to TNG when O'Brien got married and they had Molly..... wipe those episodes and even try and fathom what would have occurred in TNG as well... then the seven years of DS9..... because all of that would have drastically changed.

It's like listening to your favorite band/artists' best album, then suggesting that this song should have been like this, or the lyrics should have been written this way, the album artwork should have been this... etc. etc....

We are not the artists, we're the viewers and these are the stories, characters and developments the writers, directors and actors gave us.... these are their works of art..... appreciate them for what they are, don't go running around suggesting they should have changed this or done this that way or toss in all sorts of what-ifs.

To be constructive on my part, I could hypothesize with everybody on how one would develop a gay character(s) and their relationships in a possible ST series to come.... but going back in time and trying to ignore all that has already happened or to hypothesize on what never was, is flawed imo...... to me, I dunno.... I wouldn't say it insults the characters we grew to love and appreciate.... but it detracts what we have already been given.

Well, if that were so, then why didn't she ever choose a "simple", ordinary guy? Look at her choices (aside from Mirror Bareil, who she was clearly drawn to just because he reminded her of Bareil): Bareil was a vedek who almost became a kai, a man she deeply admired for his spirituality and morality, and with whom she shared a strong faith (even though they disagreed on some theological matters); Shakaar was the former leader of her resistance cell and later the prime minister of Bajor, an old friend she had fought with and whom she had no doubt long admired as a leader; Odo was different in that he wasn't a Bajoran or even a humanoid and his unfinished features don't exactly fit any humanoid standards of physical attractiveness, but he was an old friend from the Occupation days that she admired for his ethics and dedication to justice. Even Tom Riker, whom she was attracted to, does not exactly fit the idea of a everyman, does he. If she wanted to pick an ordinary guy to have a simple, ordinary life, she could have chosen from lots of normal guys with ordinary jobs on the station and on Bajor.

Well you make a good argument. I guess all I can say is that she picked from people she was already close to/worked with.

But even though it was Yoshi that bought them together..Kira and Miles obviously did have chemistry together. To the point that they didn't feel comfortable taking a short vacation together. Too great of temptation?

I'm not a shipper of any kind and I'm not saying they were meant to be together or anything like that. But I do think you dismiss it a little too quickly. The truth is we will never really know. Miles was never available. But they were into each other for a time, that shows there was some kind of potential I think. Even Bashir picked up on it.

I personally think that nearly all same-sex friendships in Trek are just friendships. Bashir and Garak are the only exception. It requires some subtext for fans to think that two male characters are not just friends.

Well with Bashir and Garak, while the actor said he wanted the character to be sexually ambiguous, the writers and crew for the show didn't have those intentions and didn't agree, thus imo, the possibility of a gay relationship between the two is kinda moot.

Why must every great male friendship be turned into a gay relationship? They were just two guys who started out not liking each other very much, but who became great friends in the end.

It's just a sign of the times and society.... once you become an adult, as a man, you're not supposed to have a best friend that's another man, otherwise you must be gay..... which to me seems pretty stupid.

Dax and Kira were close friends and talked about everything together and if it wasn't for them talking about this guy or that (ie: the Captain with the transparent skull) one could easily argue they were lesbian, yet nobody does.

Bashir and O'Brien went to the holosuites to play their games and such..... Kira and Dax went to the holosuites to do the same thing (King Arthur's Court, etc.)

Yet there seems to be a double standard here where because Bahir and O'Brien are men, there must be some underlying homosexual tension between them :vulcan:

Same with Spock and Kirk.... same with Data and Geordi.... same with Kim and Paris. They can talk about women until the cows come home.... they can date this woman or that woman..... yet because they're friends, none of that seems to matter and some hold out hope that they were really gay.

Why can't people just accept they were straight and liked hanging out and being friends?

It's no different then how two guys are friends today who head out to the pub to get drunk and shoot the crap.... or sit home and watch the game..... or go out and golf or whatever..... Bashir and O'Brien sat at Quarks plenty of times just shooting the crap, drinking beer and playing darts..... Bashir would hear O'Brien complain about something in his marriage, and Bashir would talk about this girl or that..... they were chums, not lovers.

Actually.... some people do, myself included. Granted I never actually think about these things seriously, i just look at it all as a bit of fun.

I don't see why people who don't ship characters are then really defensive about the extreme straightness of said characters.
I also don't see why people have huge discussions of how gay certain characters supposedly are.

To put it blunty, I don't see why this a bigger deal than it should be.
I don't ship Bashir/O'Brien because I much prefer the idea of them being friends.
I do however think Bashir/Garak would have made a great couple, and I do believe that it did have a lot of subtext. But I never thought it was actually going to happen in the show.
