I wonder if Voyager was being produced today Janeway wouldn't have such a problem of being considered "too old" at early/mid forties! I watched and enjoyed Voyager and so did a lot of my friends, not all of whom are always politically correct, but there was never any problem with a woman captain in and of itself. Of course there were a few jokes--a woman driver lost in space, asking everyone for directions, and the like, but we all watched the show week after week and were quite fond of Captain Janeway. I think the problem with a woman captain began with paranoid feminists who thought that men must hate Captain Janeway because of her position of authority. I’ve never met any such men except in the minds of certain women.

Actually, and I was there, being a Trek fan since the 70's, when it was announced that Voyager would (probably) have a woman captain, many male Trek fans unfortunately protested this. (So it had little to do w/ Janeway as a person.) They were quite vocal on message boards. A captain needs to have testosterone, a captain needs to have machismo. A woman will just not do! I was kind of shocked to see Star Trek fans, who were supposed to be more "forward thinking" say stuff like that. Of course, everyone's entitled to their own opinion, but too many male trek fans just didn't want a woman captain, period. Well, sorry, fellows, it happened. (Of course, with the state of nuTrek, being more of a "guy thing," don't know if women are again being marginalized, but we'll see, hope I'm wrong.)

Sure, before Voyager aired everyone thought that having a woman captain was all PC, and that the show would have little else to recommend it. But the show sold itself to the public by having a realistic woman captain who ruled because of her authority, not because she could out fight, out cuss, and out spit all of the men on the ship: She was fine with being a woman and did not try to be a man.

After the series began, I remember no male objection, in my circle, to a woman captain. Feminists seem to remember thing differently.

The real Seven said "Do you wish to copulate?" in a robotic voice (and if someone finds that racy... oh well ). She hardly seemed like a woman filled with desire and impatient to indulge in wild passionate sex, did she. I am sure she knows what copulation is in theory, but I don't think she's had actual experience, and she's hardly the most passionate, spontaneous person around. She'd probably have to learn it the way she did dating and dancing... and we know how that turned out. You've just described a teenager exploring their budding sexuality.

I'm not sure why we're discussing this. Even if Seven was completely ready for a relationship, how does that make her "racier" than Janeway or other adult women on VOY or any of the adult aliens VOY encounters? She's an ex-Borg who has had a problem with and needed to learn, in an awkward and difficult way, things like emotional behavior, social interaction, humor, fun, or sensuality. She may be wearing a catsuit because the producers wanted to boost the ratings, but the character is as "wild" and "racy" as Data.
