iMacs - What do you think?

My Sister-in-Law bought the 27" iMac, and while I find it a little sluggish (she went cheap and got the core2duo model, not the core i5 or i7), the size and clarity of the screen is amazing.

I also much prefer the Mac OS interface to Windows, so... if I had the money, I would absolutely get one.

My question is why one would need a 27" screen period, even on the iMac.

Short of doing video editing, crazy 3D work or stuff ...

you just answered your own question; much of the screen estate is quite useful for art / design oriented tasks.

Short of doing video editing, crazy 3D work or stuff like 27" strikes me as "too big." My 19" monitor I almost find too big sometimes.

...

Ok not really.

Macs have been industry standard for graphic arts, video editing and photography for longer than the decade I've been involved in the visual arts field - things like the 27" monitor and stable hardware/OS are part of the reason why.

I'm glad you've had a good experience with your Dell, but I have a ginormous Dell eyesore that eats up all the real estate on my desk (that happens to sit in my living room, really makes the place cozy) and has crashed its 2 hard drives every six months since I bought the way overpriced thing 7 years ago.

I'm saving my pennies for an iMac.

You won't regret it. While they are more expensive, I had a wonderful experience with my 17" iMac. It handled everything I threw at it like it wasn't a challenge, and I love to play around with video and image editors and pushing my system to it's limits. I love my new HP, and gave my iMac away to a cousin who really needed a computer, but I do miss it. It was powerful and elegant.

The all-in-one design is not for me. I am biased since I am using a dual monitor setup and do a lot of incremental upgrading.

They do look pretty in the store.

I used to feel the same way, but then working using a notebook as my primary system pretty much broke me of that. Nowadays, I just max out the RAM and get on with life.

iMacs can connect to an external monitor also via the mini-DVI port.

I just tried to create a Dell tower as close to a 27" iMac's specs as I could.

iMac: $1,999
Dell: $2,206

Keep in mind that the Dell probably comes with a better graphics card, etc. Apple tends to limit the options in their lineup, and then let the inventory stagnate for quite a while before updating their models.

27" screen?! Who the hell needs a 27" screen?!

Don't knock it until you try it. Seriously. There are some things that you don't realize you need until you've found out how they improve your experience.

I remember back when I had a single 19 inch and thought that was fantastic. Then I got a notebook and connected the monitor to it, and having the extra space was a great help. I could keep work on the monitor, and communications on the notebook screen. Or Windows, Linux, or a VNC session on one, and OSX on the other.

Today I have two 24 inch screens, and it's dream. I'm so much more efficient at my work (marketing / graphic design / web development) without all the space swapping, and I'm seriously thinking that my next system will be a Mac Pro with three large monitors. Yeah, my office will look like a miniature Mission Control, but I think the investment will be returned easily with faster work and less stress.

(Of course, screen size doesn't matter all that much if you aren't upgrading your resolution also. Only so much will fit within 1024 pixels -- on any size screen)

As for the topic at hand: What do I think of iMacs... I think they're awesome machines. I don't have one personally, but I do a fair amount of drooling whenever I visit my friend's place and use his. Just be sure to get the base amount of RAM from Apple and then max it out at Crucial.com

The yellow screen issue is only on the 27" iMac and is a manufacturer issue (I forget if it is Samsung or Toshiba making the screens). The same maker puts out some 27" Dell screens and they are having the same issue.

Apple is not advertising it, but there are reports that it is quietly buying back the faulty iMacs at 115% of the purchase price.

Why would they do that? The things are presumably still under warranty, why not just replace them?

As already stated if you're a casual computer user 24" is pretty big. But if you're a developer like me multiple monitors are now almost a given.

That's what they are doing. There's no 115% buyback that I'm aware of.

No, they're definitely offering the buyback...

From that linked page:

According to an Apple customer support discussion with one of our readers, the 15% bonus refund is officially for "tax and shipping"—it's a flat base rate to cover your return no matter the area you are in. So if you have an 8% sales tax, you may only be pocketing 7% (and even less after shipping if you don't have an Apple Store near). Obviously this offer ranges from small bonus to adequate refund, depending on your circumstance, but returning an iMac is far from a money making venture.
