Bonz, I lived at the edge of one of those canyons in San Diego (probably a bit north and west of where you were) but I don't really have any memory of it due to being less than one year old for most of that time. There's a freeway built in the bottom of the ravine now.
If memory serves, the valley below was called Mission Valley and there was a freeway (and perhaps a shopping center on the opposite side of it.) We and Luv's restaurant (home of the free lollipops) were on one side of the highway. Obviously, I wasn't crossing the freeway.
I lived about a mile or so from the San Diego zoo (other direction from the canyon.) It was a long walk or bike ride; I don't recollect doing that more than once or twice. I was at a picnic just outside of it when a 4.5 quake hit once. Rock-n-roll!
That is such a fun area, I lived in Hillcrest right next to the zoo for awhile. I love how the junior high playground backs right up to wall that has animals right behind it.
