The Over 40s Club meeting

Oh hell, if you want to play that, how about Bill Cosby's early stuff from the late 60's into the 70's? I loved listening to those (on cassette).

Noah! I want you to build an Ark.

Right......Whats an Ark?

Get some wood build it 300 cubits by 80 cubits by 40 cubits.

Right......Whats a cubit?

I don't know which of his bits I liked more, that one or the one where he feeds his kids chocolate cake for breakfast. Have to admit that one would probably keep you from making breakfast for the kids for a while...

Do you remember when Jonathan Winters had a weekly TV show? Great stuff -- great and weird as only he could be.

I remember his football follies.

Do you remember Carlin's baseball vs football bit?

Baseball is played on a field in a park.

Football is played on a gridiron inside a stadium.

^ Oh yeah, I love that bit. I think I can remember most of it:

Baseball is a 19th century pastoral game.
Football is a 20th century technological struggle.

Baseball is played on a diamond, in a park. The baseball park.
Football is played on a gridiron, in a stadium. Sometimes called Soldier Field or War Memorial Stadium.

Baseball begins in the spring, the season of new life.
Football begins in the fall, when everything is dying.

In baseball, you wear a cap.
In football, you wear a helmet.

In football, the specialist comes in to kick.
In baseball, the specialist comes in to relieve somebody.

Baseball has no time limit. We don't know when it's gonna end - we might have extra innings!
Football is rigidly timed, and it will end, even if we have to go to sudden death.

Baseball is based on ups. Who's up? Are you up? I'm not up!
Football is based on downs. What 'down' is it?

In football, you receive a penalty.
In baseball, you make an error.

In baseball, in the stands, there's kind of a picnic feeling - emotions may run high but there's not that much unpleasantness.
In football, during a game, you can be sure that at least 47 times you will be capable of taking the life of a fellow human. Preferably a stranger.

Football is played in any kind of weather. Rain, snow, sleet, hail, can't see the game, don't know if there IS a game - mud on the field, can't read the uniforms, can't read the yard markers, the struggle will continue.
In baseball, if it rains, we don't go out to play!

Football has hitting, clipping, piling on, personal fouls, late hitting, unnecessary roughness, the block, clip, kick, blitz, bomb, offense and defense.
Baseball has the 'sacrifice'...

And to sum this all up, the objective of the game is totally different. The object of the game in football is for the quarterback, also called the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting all receivers with deadly accuracy, in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use the shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing his aerial assault with a sustained ground attack which punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.
In baseball, the object is to go home! And to be safe. "I hope I'm safe at home."

Wow, I have not been here in a very long time, what do I have to do to get attention, mention someone who shall not be mentioned???? Of course, if I do mention them, most people around here who say: WHO!!!!

The Chocolate Cake routine is the best comedy bit I think I've ever heard (although it came out much later than Noah).

When I first saw that performance (Bill Cosby: Himself) I hurt from laughing so hard.

"Dad is great! Gives us chocolate cake!"

Can't remember if I've posted this yet, but I'm rewatching Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In via Netflix. What an absolutely nutty and hilarious show. I remember it (somewhat) as a kid, but what was absolutely risque then is just plain silly by today's standards  Goldie Hawn was absolutely DITSY and Dick Martin was fantastic when coupled with Dan Rowan's straight-man.

Who can forget such bits as, "... a poem, by Henry Gibson", the Fickle Finger of Fate, News of the Future, etc.

^ VERRRRRRY INTERESTING! But stupid!

Watching it now, do you feel it looks very dated?

Considering how topical the show was, absolutely; however, it is still humorous. If you get down to it, The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show was very deep political satire of the day.

Tyrone F Horneigh: "Do you believe in the hereafter?"
Gladys: "Of course I do."
Tyrone F Horneigh: "Well... then, you know what I'm here after! "

Comedy gold! :guffaw:

^ i remember watching it with my parents. So many of the jokes went right over my head. It's cool that you can find complete shows like that nowadays.

ACH! I LOVE THIS THREAD!!!

All the comedy album memories are about to make my head explode. LOL! I always loved the Noah and the Ark bit. :)

And yes, Laugh In was hysterical. Some years ago, while traveling well off the beaten path (in northern New Hampshire or Vermont, I forget which), I ran across "Walnettos" and I nearly lost it.

One of my very few "brushes with fame" when I was in High School was meeting Ruth Buzzy in a "Cindy's" (like a "Denny's") in the LA area. I was star struck. LOL!

I used to watch Laugh-In all the time when I was a kid. I've got a couple of DVDs now. I should check to see if anything more has been published. I love that stuff. Also loved Therese Graves and Judy Carne.

"Say 'good night,' Dick."

Am I on Candid Camera?!:guffaw:

Candid Camera. Probably another reference that people might not get anymore. Today you'd have to ask "Am I being Punk'd?"

T'Bonz;3801238 and the occasional porn collection hidden in a bush.[/QUOTE said:
Days when one had to work to find porn and get really lucky finding such a stash.

What is up with the porn in bushes? I've heard people all over the country describe that. We found a bunch when we were teenagers too. I don't think I have ever owned a bush, but I have owned a lot of porn and I would never keep it in the shrubbery.:wtf:

Agreed ..., although you may have finally explained why a certain group of Knights (who many here may recall) were so keen to have a shrubbery brought to them.

You don't need to be over 40 to get that one. :)

Bonz, I lived at the edge of one of those canyons in San Diego (probably a bit north and west of where you were) but I don't really have any memory of it due to being less than one year old for most of that time. There's a freeway built in the bottom of the ravine now.

If memory serves, the valley below was called Mission Valley and there was a freeway (and perhaps a shopping center on the opposite side of it.) We and Luv's restaurant (home of the free lollipops) were on one side of the highway. Obviously, I wasn't crossing the freeway.

I lived about a mile or so from the San Diego zoo (other direction from the canyon.) It was a long walk or bike ride; I don't recollect doing that more than once or twice. I was at a picnic just outside of it when a 4.5 quake hit once. Rock-n-roll!

^ Yeah, Mission Valley is where the stadium is, and now Interstate 8 runs through there. I was about four miles north, near La Jolla -- different canyon, different freeway.

Noah: How you gonna do it?
God: I'M GONNA MAKE IT RAIN FOR A THOUSAND DAYS AND DROWN 'EM RIGHT OUT.
Noah: Riiiiiiiight. Listen, do this, you'll save water— let it rain for forty days and forty nights, and wait for the sewers to back up.
God: RIIIIIIIIGHT.

Laugh-In definitely looks dated, but the funny holds up quite well. And Rocky and Bullwinkle is still pretty brilliant, both as political satire and as beautifully-timed comedy; we Netflixed a season's worth a while back and had a great evening watching it.
