Would Obama prefer Kirk or Picard?

Which great Captain would Obama prefer?

I don't think it would matter who he'd choose. Either character would go to the mat, do what's right, and solve the whole world's problems in under an hour.

Man, there'd be a heck of lot of amazingly awesome shows I wouldn't have had the joy of seeing if I gave up on things after two episodes.

I imagine Obama would prefer Picard, since they are similar in temperament.

^Exactly. Someone in the press had dubbed him "Spock" and Obama said he was extremely happy about it.

I think he really is a Spock kinda guy, with a little Picard thrown in for good measure.

I was wondering which great Captain he'd prefer and why? What do you guys think?

Picard. He practically IS Picard.

Take the situation with the Iranians who were protesting the rigged election of Ahmadinejad (sp?). He practically quoted the Prime Directive as his reason for refusing to support them!

Reminded me of a number of times where Picard used the PD to walk away from blatant abuses and suffering.

Kirk and Janeway, on the other hand, had a tendency to go right into situations--screw the PD.

Oh, and on the Sisko thing--sorry. Sisko is way, way too badass for Obama. Obama is not in Sisko's category. At least, if he is, he hasn't proven it to me yet. Show him kicking ass and taking names (and NOT just against people who give him bad press) and THEN we'll talk.

What do you suggest Obama should have done in that situation?

- Bomb the infrastructure of Iran, which does more harm to the protesters than it does to the government?
- Bomb government buildings and start taking out government personal, which might prompt retributions against the protesters to prevent them from taking over in the subsequent power vacuum?
- Impose strict sanctions on imports into Iran, which again hurt the protesters more than they hurt the government?
- Invade with a sea, air, and ground presence having to remain to control Iran after the invasion, which might be a problem considering we're already involved in two other similar and costly wars/occupations?
- Make a bunch of empty promises to pledge active support for the protesters which we can't back up with actual actions right now both for diplomatic and logistical reasons?

Something else? Let's hear it.

^^ All of the above. Along with badass and kickass, you've got to have dumbass. :rommie:

I REALLY need to give this DS9 thing another look!

Obama says he's not comfortable with victory, That it brings him the mental image of Emperor Hirohito signing the surrender document on the USS Missouri (The Emperor didn't, it was the Ambassador and a General).

Starfleet Captains are all about victory.

So, my vote is for none of the above.

Yes, you really should. Though, I can imagine why some people would be put off if they'd only seen the first couple of episodes and weren't watching them with the intention to see the show the whole way through.

Anyway, Obama doesn't strike me as a Sisko fan (as badass as Sisko might be). He seems more like a Picard man.

Yeah, it was like "is this supposed to be riveting sci-fi?". Just couldn't take it. It's not on too often right now so it would entail buying the seasons. Glad to know it got better though.
