Houston becomes the largest city to elect openly gay mayor?

Actually, it's God's Word. Not mine.
God told you to judge others?

No. God tells me homosexuality is an abomination. It's a sin. Such a person is unrepentant and will not receive my vote because they do not represent my values. :(
But you let them teach your kids. So the fact someone might be the perfect (to use a word) match to your political ideals is completely secondary to their sexual life? Seems a bit narrow of focus.

The difference is that I'm not out to take someone's job after they already have it. Maybe I should reconsider that stance if such information came to light. You've given me something to think about.

In a way your are, well at least contributing to taking their job (if in office) or denying them work they are qualified for (if running) based solely on their sexual orientation.

Who cares if the mayor is straight, gay, bi-sexual, or wears underwear of the opposite gender? Would you have expressed the same "joy" had the Mayor-elect been a one-armed man, a wheel-chair bound woman, or perhaps a minority female under-25?

I suppose it's kind of worth noting if only for the fact that 6 and a half years ago this woman could have been arrested, jailed, and fined in Houston just for being a lesbian.

Now she runs the town. That's progress, and progress quite quickly accomplished.

Sorry, no tolerance for intolerant people. Try again.
I was with you up to this statement.

If you practice tolerance, except for the people you find intolerant, then that isn't really tolerance. It's like shuting down someones free speach or right to assemby because you don't agree with them. I'm not saying the you have to endorse TLS's thoughts, there's is, in my mind, a difference between tolerance and acceptance. But isn't it a little too easy to shut down TLS solely because he's outside the main stream of consciousness?
People seem to be confused about what tolerance means. Tolerance doesn't mean liking something. There are many things I don't like, but I tolerate-- from smoking to religion to space battles in movies-- because it's a big world and other people have Rights and individual taste and so forth. But that doesn't mean I have to like it, or that I shouldn't work to change it.

It's simply a question of morality and to me that's more important than any political issue.

What would YOU do if your kid was homosexual? What would you think? That's he/she's the 'work of the devil'? Would you love him/her any less just because he/she's homosexual? Would you disown him/her?

If you answer 'I would love my child, regardless of sexuality', you're a hypocrite. If you answer 'no, I wouldn't have anything to do with my kid', you're a terrible person.

My dad sounds just like you. The very topic of religion came up and when the subject of homosexuals came up, his answer was 'shoot them all'. I asked him (I was there with my older brother, we are athiest), 'so if Derek were born gay, would you shoot him?' and my dad couldn't even look at us because he knows he wouldn't shoot my brother and he knows I just pointed out how much of a hypocrite he his.

You are free to not agree with that lifestyle but to include that in how you percieve a person is really stupid. How would you like it if people read your answer here and just assumed you were the biggest pile of crap on the planet and everyone hated you because they didn't know you but they judged you on your beliefs? It's the same as just judging someone based on their sexuality. Their sexuality has nothing to do with this situation at all.

I'm not trying to flame you or anything, your views are just stupid. What if you were in this person's shoes and people didn't vote for you because you had a stupid haircut? Your haircut has nothing to do with the election but that was the reason you lost. Would you think that is fair? I don't think you would.

If my child were a homosexual I would get them immediate psychological help. Would I love them any less? Of course not. Would I let them know the error of their ways? Of course.

Because someone is a homosexual is not a reason to hate them, it's a reason to help them.

Shoot them? Are you kidding me?

We all base our impression of people on their choices and their lifestyle. To not admit this is disingenious.

And I really couldn't care less what someone thinks about me.

I respect your right to disagree with me and support your right to vote as you see fit.

I seek permision for this thread to be given special exception to Misc rules and allowed into TNZ territory.

Seconded.

Don't let yourselves be goaded or baited into getting a warning. It isn't worth it and it would make someone all too happy. ;)

Isn't their a word for someone who goads and baits people into getting warned? Wouldn't such a person be violating a rule? Can anyone argue that such a person is posting in here and saying things to be part of a discussion rather than to stir the pot?

Who is being goaded or baited besides me? Would you like me to show you where I have been baited and goaded?

I haven't come close to attacking anyone. Or is it considered goading when someone voices an unpopular opinion? It's almost comical.

I didn't mention any names - so there's no reason for you to play the 'victim' card. :)

We're never going into TNZ territory here, so don't even think about it. And voicing an opinion, especially in response to questions, is not Trolling. So let's keep the discussion on track, please.

But when that opinion consists of calling homosexuality a choice when, in fact, it is a natural trait people are born with, then that opinion must be called for what it is: uninformed, unsupported by reality and, quite frankly, stupid.

As for the actual topic at hand: good for Houston to join the rest of us in the 21st century :techman:

I guess that the mayors of both Berlin (Klaus Wowereit, Social Democrat - SPD) and Hamburg (Ole von Beust, Christian Democrat - CDU) would agree with me. ;)

The people of Paris who elected and re-elected a gay mayor (Bertrand Delanoë - socialist...horror, nearly, communist  ) also welcome Houston in the 21st century :techman:

Allo Houston ? Nous vous entendons parfaitement !
