As well as many of the above-given reasons, I loved this episode because it was one of the three or four where we actually got to see other Starfleet vessels besides the NX-01

I saw it this week for the first time and while it is a stand alone episode it was pretty good for me. A what-if scenario that departed from the usual.

I thought so, too. I think the thing that got me was the desperation of all the characters. Really nice work from Sussman. I think he was one of the writers who understood and usually put the characters first (before story).
