Just out of curiosity, after reading the thread about nearest body of water, how many people here can (or can't) swim?

Personally I can a little bit, but far from being a strong swimmer.

I learned when I was a child since I had lessons at junior school, but I really didn't like swimming, so I only did it when authority compelled me. I wasn't a good swimmer -- I could just about keep afloat and propel myself.

Then I grew up and the one time I tried it as an adult, the motions just didn't work anymore. Still didn't enjoy it. So no, I cannot swim.

Swimmer here. Love being in the water. Crawl, breaststroke, backstroke, but I can't seem to be able to learn butterfly. Sometimes I do a bit of snorkeling, too. Fun stuff.

It's always seemed strange to me when people say they can't swim. I'm not even sure it's something I learned how to do; I just did it.

No, and it shocks people that I was in the Navy and couldn't swim. I was certified as a Class 4 Swimmer, which is a swimmer in need of assistance. First thing I did once I got aboard ship was quickly learn the location of life jacket lockers and the quickest routes to lifeboats.

Sure can. I'm not a great swimmer by any means, but I can certainly dog-paddle, backstroke, and do a fair imitation of a breaststroke. I can stay afloat indefinitely, especially in salt water.

I am an excellent swimmer. After five years on swim team as child, I'd better be. I am not fast (I wasn't fast as a kid, either, which is why I was on the team only five years), but yes, I can swim really well, although like Iguana Tonante, my butterfly is extremely weak. I can manage a few strokes, but I just haven't got the upper body strength or whole-body coordination or whatever it is that you need to swim the butterfly.

Not a great swimmer, but I can do the forward crawl, breast stroke, sorta side stroke, and 2 kinds of backstroke. Used to swim all the time when I was young. Now I'm usually just lazy and doggy paddle unless I need to do something better.

I'm surprised it isn't a requirement to serve.

To swim? It is. Luckily, I didn't have to go through remedial swim class while in boot camp. We had about 8 guys in my company who had to attend class every night for a few weeks so they could pass the test.

Former competitive swimmer/water polo player here. I'm a very good swimmer, and thanks to the water polo, I could easily tread water for many, many hours if I had to.

So, do they give Air Force recruits a pair of wings and a map, then? :D

I'm headin' out to Navy boot in a few weeks. Swimming should be fine, its the running I'm worried about.

i can swim breaststroke but thats about it and i swim like a volvo driver
Recklessly and convinced that you're driving the fastest car in the world?

I can swim, yes. Breaststroke is my best, backstroke and crawl okay. I haven't ventured further then that. Should be added that I'm the only one of my siblings who haven't been involved in competitive swimming.

I think in my case it's a matter of spine flexibility. For all I try, my head can't make it out of the water when I try butterfly, so I'm limited to two or three strokes before I start to drown.

I used to be a lifeguard, so I know all the strokes!

I could compete with butterfly back in the day, But I don't know about now. It's ALL upper body strength.
