So, what type of ship was the Kelvin, anyhow?

I think it said in the novelization that it was a Federation scoutship. Then again that's noncanon.

It was the Chariot of Robau!

Obvious, really. She was the erstwhile Saladin class single nacelle destroyer Rahman, NCC-514. But since Starfleet in the 2230s had more destroyers than it really needed, and too few scouts, it bolted a dorsal pod on the Rahman to give her better sensors plus a full contingent of exploration and support shuttlecraft. To denote the new role as an observation vessel, Starfleet added the letter O in front of the registry number, and changed the name from the "famous generals series" to the "famous scientists series".

That would be the ideal ship type to explore the borderlands of Romulan territory: a badass warship converted for frontline exploration. Of course, by 2233, she was already a bit worn down, and had not received the cutting-edge refits many of her still-destroyer sisters enjoyed, such as the enlarged, more rounded dorsal and ventral superstructures and saucer lower rim, or the slightly more compact PB-31 warp engine dangling on a slightly elongated neck. And now she never would...

You beautiful, beautiful person. I want you to look after Star Trek for the rest of forever now.

As for Robau, he's not all that. This whole "you're alive because awesome badass mutha Robau has decided not to pwn your face" TrekBBS meme isn't getting any funnier. The man shuttled over to the Narada and was stabbed through the heart for his trouble. That's not awesome.

Kinda big for a scout type ship, hmmm? If it was a deep space exploration (Wow, that being in a Trek film....exploration?) ship, I could understand it being so big.

I don't know if its considered all that big with the X.O. only being a Lieutenant. I would say that 800 lives remark was either mostly in error or mostly civilian.

Robau used to have a drop-top hot rod but wanted something even more badass to pick up green Orion slave chicks in...hence, the Kelvin.

His rank insignia is that of a lieutenant commander, for what it's worth.

Starfleet added a long and fat cylinder to the ship to reflect the character of her new captain.

Since Trek often ret-cons names of ship classes from their early concept designs. (Having a hard time thinking of a specific example, but you know what I mean...)
I saw we just call it the Iowa class since that's what the Kelvin's original name was going to be.

Yeah, I couldn't agree more.
"Hey, he was born in Iowa, so lets have him born on a ship called the Iowa."
Yeah... dumb idea.

However, ship classes named after states seem to be pretty popular, so maybe there's just a coincidence that he was born and raised in the state with the same name as the ship class his father died on.
That could always be one more reason that he rented his uncle... idk, just pulling this out of my rear.

It is a space ship.

Named for the people who designed it, who obviously had too much "space" between their ears.

Oh wait. Sorry, that's the nuTrek Enterprise I was thinking about. ;)

What was it's main function/purpose? Might help explain the size and so on. :borg:
My personal take on the Kelvin?

It's a colonization transport. Its main role is to carry all personnel and materials for colony establishment to their eventual destination.

It has a single nacelle because multi-nacelle designs are more manueverable, but less efficient, at warp. Since this ship is not intended to serve in hostile or unexplored areas, it's not really necessary for it to do much but fly in a straight line while at warp.

It's as large as it is because it needs a great deal of volume for short-term lodging for colonists, and a great deal of volume for colony-establishment supplies.

Its weaponry is mainly short-range "point defense" hardware, of the type which would come in handy engaging pirates or other "local threats" but not so much when engaging enemy capital ships.

It's one of the few types of ships that have "family accomodations" aboard, because the entire ship is really designed to carry entire families to their destinations.

It has a massive landing bay which carries a sizeable number of shuttles, used for carrying personnel and equipment from orbit to surface, for performing low-altitude planetary mapping operations, and so forth.

It would stay on-station with a newly-established colony until the colony was up and running and was able to be self-sufficient.

That's what I see the Kelvin doing. And I can easily see that fitting in with the TOS world, overall, albeit I think that a TOS version of the Kelvin would have looked somewhat different (not as much as you might think, though).

Your mileage may vary, of course.
