Babylon 5 - I'm finally going to do it

FYI, the Technomage that pops up in that episode, Elric, is the peep who taught Galen. tru dat! Anyways, I'm sure it's been brought up in this thread, but I really recommend the Technomage Trilogy of books. The Technomage episode is really expanded upon in the books, as well as later events such as behind the scenes things going down in "Za Ha Dum". And while on the topic of books, you have to read the Psi Core trilogy. F'n killer.

not that anyone expects you to go through 56 pages (!!!!) of this thread, but in fact both those books have come up before. To wit:

... The Technomage Trilogy is, IMNSHO, just a great set of novels!

... i love galen in the Technomage Trilogy, but find the character onscreen annoying

... can't recommend The Psi-Corp Trilogy and the Technomage Triology enough.

Personally, I thought the Centauri Trilogy best captured the spirit of Babylon 5. The Psi Corps books had a different tone, and I was irritated by how the Technomage Trilogy practically rewrote a couple of second and third season episodes by slipping major events into them, occasionally within uninterrupted scenes. That's not to say they were bad, but the Centauri ones were my favorites far and away.

Try to watch it without preconceptions. Use the fast-forward button on any scene where Byron speaks.

Fixed that.

It was my understanding that what you just did was only allowable in TNZ. *Do NOT* do it again.

I really don't like it when people do that to my posts. It's annoying and quite rude.

Okay, I was aware of no such rule here, and it's considered quite fun and amusing on some other boards I post on, but I meant no harm, and apologize if I upset anyone.

It's not really a rule, but more of a pet peeve. It happens on another board I post on quite a bit, and it's just as bad as "Fail" and all those iterations.

Jan, tomalak... it's a generally creative way to make a point is all that Forbin did, with no intent to discredit or mislead anyone. It's always done in a way to point out that the person making the change is telling you that they did. What has been ruled against before are those edits where the person changing material is intentionally trying to mislead folks as to what the original person said.

Now, to those who don't have a problem with the technique, I can see why some folks won't care for it. Intentional or not, if someone expresses opposition to having their posts played with like this, then I ask that you respect that and post accordingly. Forbin, thank you for your comments as well.

If anyone wants to discuss it further, let's take it to QSF or PM where I'd be happy to continue.

No sweat. We indulge in it freely over at Wordforge and share a laugh. Thus I had no idea it would bother anybody, but I'm happy to respect such an opinion.
Carry on. :)

I'm really liking noticing these small nuances in the show. I was watching The Long Dark last night, and they actually said a Gropo was short for Ground Pounder. I must not heard that the first time, yet there is an episode coming up with that very thing.

Also, one thing I love about this series is being able to see the crew out of uniform. In Star Trek, I love any episode where the crew was out of uniform, because it let's them be lose. Of course some of those out of uniform fashion might be getting a bit dated now, but like in the original series with City or Patterns, or Piece of the Action, I enjoyed Kirk and Spock be out of uniform. Here, we get to see it so much more, and even the Captain can let lose and just be John Sheridan for a change. Of course with Lochley I wish we got to see more of a commanding presence with her, but the point still remains. It's really cool that while these people work in the military, they are still people through and through.

Yeah, that's one of the ways that B5 rewards repeated viewing and close attention.

That's a good point, as well as the fact that clothes on B5 are functional. They've got pockets and fasteners and can be put on and taken off on cameral like normal people would do.

Doing so made it possible for there to be scenes the showed what the uniform meant to people like Sheridan, too. How he took off his insignia in "Messages from Earth" and left his jacket behind in "Severed Dreams"

For those in the UK who like to watch B5 on TV once a day, this was just posted on another site:

If anyone can receive the British cable channel 'FX', they might be interested to know that (at last

) Babylon 5 is being broadcast, starting with the pilot, "The Gathering", on Monday 9th November (5pm UK time) and following that with the episodes of series 1 on successive weekdays (at 6pm) - repeating each week's episodes on the following Sunday.

Been too long since B5 was on TV!

I'll say. I'll be honest: I've never seen B5 on TV, like, ever. I think the Lost Tales was on Sky1 a while back, but not the actual TV show.

I can only assume it was around in first run back when I had no idea what it was, and I caught part of an episode of Crusade back when I had no idea what that was either.

But B5? It's more likely I'll find an episode of Logan's Run or the original Battlestar Galactica when channel surfing (I am so very serious).

I may just follow this, for the lark. Anyone else up for it?

I am! These kinds of threads are fascinating to follow, for us "First Ones".

If I might suggest... when you're ready to do so, feel free to start a new thread. This one has gotten rather long and possibly difficult to navigate for some.

Do I qualify as a "First One" even though I didn't see "The Gathering" when it first aired? I did see almost all of the episodes on their first airing. In fact, "Comes the Inquisitor" may be the only one I missed repeatedly and didn't see until it was on TNT.

Hoping I qualify...

My first episode was "Racing Mars". I didn't get get to see 101 through 409 until the TNT syndication. Though I very dimly recall seeing the pilot when it first aired possibly, and I also think I saw part of "Convictions" when channel flipping.

My first exposure to B5 was I think a quick behind the scenes bit on some breakfast program or another (probably The Big Breakfast.) All I can remember from it was some effects footage or another and a bit with Claudia Christian showing someone around the C'n'C set. For some reason the only part that I remember clearly is her warning the cameraman not to get too close to the window or it'd spoil the illusion (created the black cloth & x-mas lights.)

I know I saw some of season 1 on it's first airing on Channel 4 (TKO, Voice in the Wilderness & Chrysalis for sure) usually at stupid o'clock at night. Season 2 was spotty viewing as I recall but from the last third of Season 2 onwards I didn't miss a single one.

So not a 'First One' exactly. Maybe a Minbari. ;)

I remember long ago while channel surfing as a kid or early teenager I came across a scene of something that looked like a sci-fi show because of the set and uniforms (at the time I was solely a TNG fan, with a sporadic interest in DS9 and VOY,) featuring two characters in a dim medical-lab sort of place...one was resigning from his position and the other understood but was unhappy about it. Of course, years later when I first went through B5 on DVD that scene popped up again as Franklin and Sheridan in "Interludes and Examinations." It was both really fun and really surreal realizing "wait a minute, I've SEEN this before!!!"
