Babylon 5 - I'm finally going to do it

If anyone else can help here I'd appreciate it. I watched 'Each Night I Dream of Home' last night, and Gideon seemed to already know Lochley, but it was her first appearance for me.

Just ignore it. It was originally written as their first meeting, but when that episode was moved back, they looped in Gideon's "Good to see you again" line.

Logically, since at some early point they went to B5 to meet with the ISA ambassadors (as seen in the flashback in 'Racing The Night') Gideon probably first met her then, however briefly. So it's not a problem either way

Well, Crusade doesn't have A Call to Arms, either. And the movies box set doesn't have Legend of the Rangers. It seems like all the sets are missing something key. Alas.

That's a special case. A Call to Arms was a Babylon 5 movie with Babylon 5 characters that set up the storyline that the Crusade series later picked up. The movie is exactly where it should be.

The Gathering on the other hand, DOES in fact, belong in season one of B5, but for some reason, it's not.

So, I'm trying to get a friend into Babylon 5. She and I have a lot of similar tastes, as does her husband. I gave her the season one DVD last week and explained how the show starts slow, but really picked up. I gave her a list of the episodes I consider the "better" ones (most the ones that really advance the plot).

She saw "Midnight on the Firing Line" last night, but it was late and she had trouble getting into the show. She's not sure if it's because of the show or because she was tired, but she's going to try more episodes later.

I really feel that she'll like it and hope she does give it the chance. I know that once she gets to season three she and her husband will fall in love with Marcus, not to mention the fact that I consider season three to be the best of the five seasons.

I guess in addition to the fact that we have similar tastes and enjoy really picking shows apart and talking about the elements, I'm hoping to live vicariously through her and her husband. I saw a smattering of season one episodes, though I started with "TKO" onward and saw the rest of season one in repeats. I also saw a smattering of season two episodes, but only started making the commitment to follow the messed up weekly schedule for the show with season three. So my experience with the show wasn't in chronological order, which I always regret (if I could have my memories of the show wiped so I could rewatch the episodes in order, I think I would!). Add to that the fact that I was a freshman in college when season five came out and didn't spring for cable, so I missed out on the first run of those episodes (as well as the last four of season four) and relied on the Babylon 5 Spoiler Junkies site to read about them, so again, my experience watching them for the first time was not "pure." I'm hoping to experience the thrill of watching in chronological order through them.

Bah. It's a backdoor pilot that introduces two key Crusade characters, the Excalibur, the Drakh plague, and also has Lochley, who would be carried over from B5 to Crusade as a semi-regular.

Well The Gathering didn't take place in 2258 and season one did, so it's not really part of it. It's more of a prologue.

Crusade

Hope all you don't mind, I changed the subject line to make it be more appropriate. ;)

War Zone

So, who wants to talk about Crusade? I'm sure in the 10 years this board has been here this subject hasn't really come up that much, and when it has, it's always been when the main subject was talking about Babylon 5. I'm sure I'll mention B5 some during this series, but it's also best to look at this series on it's own terms, as a spin-off.

So, how was the first episode on the DVD sets, which is the order I'm going. I'd so promising, with a lot to look forward to, but in tone kind of reminded me of Enterprise's Expanse in one way. Gideon being the hardlined, hard ass superior officer, even telling his superior officer he's going to stop at nothing to get the mission done. I hope this is a consistent thing, because 1) archer in season 3 wasn't all that consistent, and 2) I like Gideon so far. I also like Matheson, Galen and Dureena, the last two mainly because of Call to Arms. Let's see what happens in the next episodes. The other characters so far are really just there.

As for this plot, about capturing the Drakh captain and rescuing IPX survivors, it was good. The battle sequence was interesting in that it was no dialog and all score. At first I wasn't sure, but after thinking about it some more, that wasn't too bad. Sometimes, what you show is better than what you actually say.

Like I said, promising start. Hopefully the remaining 12 will be interesting too. I have to think though that the whole "Who do you serve, and who do you trust" will be an underlying theme to the whole series.

'War Zone' is one of my least favourites, and for good reason. It wasn't supposed to be the first episode, it wasn't supposed to exist at all; it was a network mandated thing. People getting into fist fights, crappy riot stock footage and unnecessary exposition, all from TNT notes.

The actual first episode is 'Racing the Night', which as I recall was moved to somewhere around the middle. Storywise picks up about three months into the mission, going on the assumption that everyone saw ACtA and didn't need to see how the crew got together (a much better opener IMO.)

Still, 'War Zone' isn't THAT bad and they made the best they could of it. Just be aware as you go through the series you're going to see some weird variation in characterisation and story tempo and as such the show requires a little extra patience (not much extra mind) than say season 1 of B5.

On the up side, there's still the best to look forward to. ;)

I don't mind "War Zone" at all. "Racing the Night" is my favorite episode from CRU but I thought WZ was a decent pilot. Sci-fi pilots do usually suck after all ;)

It's not a bad episode except for the fistfight at the beginning. I hate that with the same firey passion that some folks have for
the weapons weapons system in Legend of the Rangers. Or for Byron.

In the end, the fist fight absolutely had nothing to do with the episode. Maybe it might be brought up again, but now that they've been sent on this mission, the more I think about the fist fight scene, the more I wish they had completely cut it out entirely and maybe start the whole series on Babylon 5, thus giving Lochley an appearance in the first episode, since her name is listed in the credits.

I don't think the opening fist fight is such a huge deal. B5 was replete with gratuitous violence. That's one of the reasons I like it, it's fast paced and action packed. It demonstrated the insane reaction to the Drakh Attakh.

Personally, I ignore War Zone completely. I thought it was horrendously boring. Racing the Night was superior in every respect.

Re: Crusade

me :techman:
and because it's been forever since i saw the show, i popped in 1x01 War Zone this evening.

unlike bakula (or ENT actors in general - with the exception of Trip), Crusade actually had some surprisingly good talent! Gary Cole (Capt. Gideon) went on to play the Vice President in West Wing and DDK (matheson) is of course famous for LOST.

also - no love for Maxmillion?!?! well i guess this is only the first ep - but the man ROCKS this show!

and this guy

, i didn't think it was possible to have a worse Warren Keffer!

they did that with Sheridan a couple of times. better.

"Who do you serve, and who do you trust" will be an underlying theme to the whole series.

personally, not a galen fan. actually, i love galen in the Technomage Trilogy, but find the character onscreen annoying (and to be fair, he changes so much in the novel, that he is hardly the same person...)

also, having him say And so it begins was over-the-top. leave the line for kosh, please.

War Zone is a decent pilot, but I found that after viewing the far superior Call to Arms, it was a bit redundent. Racing the Night, the real first episode, is a bit more subtle, and is much more entertaining. I think the next time I see Crusade, I might just skip this episode. :D

Mal, I agree that Galen spewing out Kosh's dialogue was gratuitous. Having it repeated in the credits every episode was also an odd move, I thought. I enjoy the music to the opening credits enough, but the 'Who Are You?' stuff was overdone, and not as mysterious as when done on B5. The B5 credits sequences were all much better than Crusade's.

Anyway, there is much to look forward to - there are better episodes coming. :)

Seconded.

If for no other reason than it makes no sense whatsoever. They're on an spaceship, how can they be worried about being infected? They're in a sealed environment, in a vacuum, the thing can't land so what exactly are they freaking out about?
I rather suspect JMS may have intentionally made it look stupid because it was one of those infamous "we need more fist fights on the bridge" type notes.

You can't leave that line for Kosh, if for no other reason than by this time there are no more Vorlons left. Plus, the perception of the Vorlons as a whole is considerably different. Kosh my have been the exception, but with Crusade it was time to set itself apart from the original show a bit more.

Having Galen intone the opening and those words made sense to me. Then again I rather enjoy a character who says "I have no surviving enemies. At all."

The fist fight was a TNT network mandate. They told jms to dump his pilot episode and shoot a new one with a fistfight. Seriously.

(or have we already mentioned that and I missed it?)

A pilot is used to sell a show, it's not the first episode of a show. That's why sometimes a movie of the week is called a 'backdoor' pilot, because it was made and then used to sell a show after the fact. Crusade didn't have a pilot episode, it was commissioned based on Babylon 5. "A Call to Arms" was a 'bridge' between B5 and Crusade and the episodes were supposed to start immediately afterward.
