Do you think Kirk was made captain early

I think that in a real life perspective that would be too early, but that it fit the movie and it wouldn't have been as good if they had left him to become captain in a later film.

3rd attempt: Cheats so blatantly that he'll be caught, so he can publicly rail against what he thinks is a ridiculous test.

If that was the case, why did he wait? If someone wanted to make a point, shouldn't he admit that he cheated instead of waiting to hear it from his superiors?

Who knows, maybe he wanted his point to be dramatic as possible? Kirk never seemed to be one for understatement. Better to wait and be pulled up in front of all the cadets*, arguments in hand waiting to do a verbal beatdown of the policy/test in front on everyone, rather than go to instructors in private to make his point clear.

*A question for those who've ever been in military training, is it usual for all the proceedings for this kind of hearing during training to be done in front of the accused's fellow trainees? I thought it would just be the sentencing if anything.

Although it does seem a little soon for Chris Pine's Kirk to be captain of the USS Enterprise, I understand Abram's wish for it because Kirk is supposed to be Captain in Star Trek, its what audiences, whether they are Trekker's or not, expect him to be. I am actually OK with him being Captain, although Kirk in the movie was 25 Pine is 29, and when the XII is filmed he will be 30 so they can move ahead 5 years if they choose to.

Because it was plot point worthy of Bucky Buckson, Space Rocketeer ratherthan Star Trek. I guess one man's "whiny slug" is another man's "fan with a modicum of intellect and critical thinking skills."

Once again, any serious criticism of this film is greeted with sheer contempt. Against expectations, I liked the film but my opinion of its TrekBBS cheering section hasn't changed one bit.
I love the movie. I can also discuss some of its shortcomings. The problem, for me, is those who bash anyone who liked the movie at all. Some are just showing up in threads to say, "It's stupid and so is anyone who likes it," rather than contribute to the discussion.
Yes, it has flaws... yes, it is good to point them out and suggest improvements. No, it is NOT OK to simply resort to name-calling.

QFT.

I'll admit when I saw it at the time, seeing him get the Captaincy of the Enterprise so fast surprised me (with me thinking 'well that was a bit quick'), but I just got on with it, as I did with some of the other quibbles I had with the movie ('There's always a bigger fish' anyone?). You know, it's fiction, and there are sometimes going to be things that don't make sense. Didn't ruin it for me not to see it again a few times.

It's literally how vitriolic some of the posters on the board are being about the movie and in being determined to bash every single little thing. They suck out the enjoyment I had watching the film more than a red matter singularity :( Beginning to think I must be masochistic to keep arguing with them. :p

Whoa, whoa, whoa. A poster calls people who can't swallow this ludicrous plot development "whiny slugs" and somehow it's the "whiny slugs" who are resorting to name-calling and sucking all the fun out of the movie?

It's times like this I wish I did hate the movie.

Although M'Sharak and I have butted heads a few times, it all comes back to his favorite phrase:
POST not POSTER.
My first legitimate warning was for responding in like kind to a 'hater' who was bashing me for an opinion. While many get by with bashing and the responders often hear the Mods gavel (my only real complaint about TrekBBS), it is wrong on both sides to do so. Some use the excuse that, "Hey, it's just the internet!" for being rude, ill mannered idiots. It would truly be nice if everyone remembered the 'POST not POSTER' rule, but in reality it does not always happen.

No, I don't. I'll never for the life of me understand why some people have a problem with this.

Whiny slugs.

Ah yes, only people who agree with YOU have intellect.

Everyone else are mindless cheerleaders.

Okay - vitriolic bashers and effusive gushers, fans with a modicum of intellect and critical thinking skills, whiny slugs, zombie cheerleaders, skeptics, military historians, Trekkies, Trekkers, Trekkites and Trekkoids - everyone: take a deep breath and a step back, please. Remember that we're talking about the movie, and not about each other.

Now, resume. Politely, and on-topic.

Thank you.

I originally rationalized it as a consequence of the loss of so many officers and ships during the attack on Vulcan and whatever was happening at the Laurentian system. A scrapping the bottom of the barrel kind of thing for available officers. Some people have suggested a PR/morale boost stunt with a lot of strong arming, string pulling, and favors being called in. I personally find this to be the most plausible in-universe explanation as there are more experienced officers then greenhorn Kirk. I also like the idea some have suggested that in ST XII Kirk should struggle to prove he has earned it, although I doubt that this will be a plot element. Just my opinions.

Jeez, I guess I totally miscalled that one. :( Saavik is right about humor.

I had a great time at the movie. Loved it. 100% fun. But as stated before Kirk's promotion was the only thing that really bugged me. Funny, I can take altered timelines, new actors, wonky science and lensflare but not the promotion. And I even understand it from a storytelling perspective. Yet it still irks me.

I loved the movie too, but I would have loved me another movie with Captain Pike. In fact, in hindsight I enjoyed Kirk's growth so much that I wish he wasn't captain just so that we could see more of his growth from another angle.

There's nothing to say that we won't see more of Pike, though his role will be different, most likely the Admiral behind the desk briefing Kirk, though he could also be leading the cavalry if the Enterprise were ever to be in need.

I thought it was funny.

And I feel about the movie pretty much the way you do. Even Kirk's promotion only bothers me in a theoretical way.
