Re: Unworthy - Discuss/Grade Thread <SPOILERS>

The B. Dalton at the mall near where I live has been closed for a couple years now.

Re: Unworthy - Discuss/Grade Thread <SPOILERS>

^b. dalton is owned by B&N while waldenbooks is owned by borders.

Hasn't B. Dalton been out of business for a few years?

As for Waldenbooks, I don't think they are around either anymore. At least not in NYC.
good question. we had a b. dalton here in the mall until sometime earlier this year when B&N moved into the other end.

it also wouldn't surprise me if waldenbooks had been shuttered as well as a cost cutting move by borders.

Re: Unworthy - Discuss/Grade Thread <SPOILERS>

I haven't seen a Dalton or Waldens in NYC in ages.
I picked up a copy yesterday at a West Village B&N in NYC. Now I just need a few uninterrupted hours to read it :)

That would be a little suspicious at work this afternoon.

Um I was at a Waldenbooks yesterday. There is one in the Morgantown Mall in West Virginia.

Re: Unworthy - Discuss/Grade Thread <SPOILERS>

Ah crap! This news about Admiral Batiste is beyond disappointing.Even in his limited appearance he seemed much more interesting than Eden did.Nuts!
So now things settle in to Chakotay trying to deal with an isolated female superior?Yawn, been there.

Does this mean that both the most senior Starfleet officers in this project have secret origins in the delta quadrant?:wtf:
The boy scouts seem to have better vetting policies than Starfleet.

Bah!

Re: Unworthy - Discuss/Grade Thread <SPOILERS>

If Eden has been promoted out of command of Voyager, it's a shame, I would have liked to see her remain in command of the ship itself for several novels at least - as opposed to handing the reigns back to Chakotay immediately.

Re: Unworthy - Discuss/Grade Thread <SPOILERS>

Just finished and enjoyed it very much. My dominant thought is generally that I love this new direction for Voyager; it's such a perfect and pleasing way to use and build upon everything in the Delta Quadrant, I cannot wait to see where the series goes next. I especially like the dynamic of the story happening across multiple ships, it's a refreshingly different approach which I suppose is what the earlier Voyager relaunch novels lacked - she was just another ship in Federation space, now she and her fleet have a far more interesting purpose.

Eden and Cambridge both grew on me a lot on this book. I liked them in Full Circle, but they've had time to really settle in now and are strong, interesting and compelling characters. I'm easily as fond of them as the Voyager regulars (more than most in fact) and would say they're as engaging as the best of the original regular characters in the DS9 relaunch.

I was pleasantly surprised by the whole 8472 storyline, and more so that it got Batiste out of the way; I would have been happy to see Eden continue as Voyager's captain, but finding something else for Chakotay could have been awkward and her new promotion should still keep her firmly in the series.

The Indign were an interesting way to explore the Borg abstractly. I suppose I was expecting a follow-up to the loss of the Borg, as that was the stated goal of the mission to start with. Doing so with a race that admires them was a surprising and fascinating twist. Though I'm still curious to see where the next books go in the series go with it, the Borg were such a huge force in the Delta Quadrant their loss must be leading to enormous change.

I too was surprised there wasn't a direct follow-up to the Meegan story. Not even an attempt to chase after her right away? With one of the three ships available then and there? But I could also see that was setup for a later story, so not that big a surprise I suppose.

I really liked the structure of the book, there seemed to be lot of mystery and surprise twists which I enjoyed as they were gradually revealed.

So yeah, good book. I liked it more than Full Circle, but I guess that's more because it's getting on with the new exciting Voyager adventure rather than tying up lose ends and setting up for said adventure. I really can’t wait for the next book. I hope next time we'll get to see what the whole fleet gets up to (I quite like the idea of an anthology of stories from the different ships).

Re: Unworthy - Discuss/Grade Thread <SPOILERS>

^^There is always the chance I simply misinterpreted what I read when it came to that part of course.

Fair enough. Perhaps "religious" is the wrong word. Maybe reverence is better. Either way, my feeling is that after Voyager's previous time in the Delta Quadrant, everyone in command is going to be treading lightly and more inclined to err on the side of caution with new species they encounter.

Thanks for posting your thoughts. I'm glad the book worked for you.

Best,

Re: Unworthy - Discuss/Grade Thread <SPOILERS>

For some reason my Barnes and Noble around the corner still doesn't have any copies yet. Usually I have my copy of a ST book in-hand 3-4 days before the Amazon release date.

Kirsten,

Congratulations on becoming a first time mom. She's beautiful.

How does it feel?

Re: Unworthy - Discuss/Grade Thread <SPOILERS>

The one Waldenbooks we had is still open but was rebranded as a "Borders Express."

Back on main topic, can't wait to read this.

Thanks and unreal most of the time. It forces me to live every single minute absolutely in the moment. And things change all too quickly. The love is overwhelming and watching her little mind start to work is incredibly cool.

I recommend the experience highly. Now excuse me while I get the spit-up off my shirt. :)

Best,
Kirsten

Re: Unworthy - Discuss/Grade Thread <SPOILERS>

I'm waiting to get the eBook edition later on today. Then I can finish the last DS9 book and then start on Unworthy.

Re: Unworthy - Discuss/Grade Thread <SPOILERS>

Just finished the book a few minutes ago and thought I would put down some of my thoughts. Having written a "I just wanted to go home" plot in my own fan-fiction, I almost immediately saw where the Batiste story was going but the denouement was quite unexpected and made that meandering plot a little better than it might otherwise have been for me.

I'm not going into the PD issue which has already debated ad nauseum here and in several other forums related to respective books other than to say, enough is enough. We don't need another debate on that regulation every few books.

I found that the climax of Seven's story relating to her Caeliar catoms and their continued existence in the galaxy to be rather interesting and look forward to the reasons being explored in the continuation of the post-finale series. Why indeed would she have turned down perfection?

I didn't like the fact that Chakotay was placed in command of Voyager again after only a single book but I think I understand the reasons for trying to reclaim the status quo and get the familiar characters back on track. Also irritating was the Meegan plot with the Doctor (she was a hologram? Duh!!) but her interest as a character was piqued when she become one of The Eight and I look forward to the hunt to recapture them in future books (finally we get a major arc!)

Characters looking for or exploring their ancestry is a common thread in Trek and though it has not been used as often as the Borg, I found that I'm not really interested in where she comes from, though I hope that my mind is changed later on. As for Tom and Harry, I found Harry's behaviour somewhat out of character for him, but it looked to me as if he used Tom's betrayal to mask something greater, the loss/betrayal/abandonment over Janeway's death, perhaps?

I'm glad Torres and Miral are staying aboard Voyager, but I would definitely have preferred that Torres remained on extended leave, at least for another book or two--and just helping out where needed.

Overall, I really enjoyed the book and I hope that Voyager's newfound popularity continues in future books. A solid 7/10.

One more thing, there is a spelling mistake on page 311, seven lines up from the bottom of the page and four words in. "Captian" - hopefully it'll be corrected in future reprints.

Re: Unworthy - Discuss/Grade Thread <SPOILERS>

Kirsten, congratulations!
Will your daughter's name end up as a character in a Voyager novel?

I feel the same way. I really like her. I got to know her more than in Full Circle.

At the same time I know I couldn't have my cake and eat it too. I didn't want Chakotay just sitting there with nothing to do...
So it makes sense that He gets Voyager back. I loved how Eden pulled the rug out from under his feet when she told him his resignation wasn't accepted.

I think the biggest issue I have with the book is the ending drives me nuts. I want more!
Anybody know when/if the next Voyager book will come out?

Re: Unworthy - Discuss/Grade Thread <SPOILERS>

No word yet, other than that it won't be part of the Typhon Pact storyline. And since the only 24th Century books next year are TP, that means it won't be until 2011 at the earliest.
