Major League Baseball 2009

So Jason Varitek allows a critical run-scoring passed ball for the second time in two nights. Combine that with a .212 batting average, and I think V-Mart might have his job next season.

And the Sox lose, due largely to Tek's incompetence. Guess it'll be an ALDS showdown against the Halos next month.

Tek started off the season strong, but just doesn't seem to have enough gas to last the entire year. I suspect he'll either retire or spend most of his time on the bench next year with V-Mart taking over regular catching.

Well, the Tigers lose again. Thats five of six they lost to Kansas City. Their starting pitching has totally fell apart. A huge series against the Twins starts tomorrow. I'm guessing Pegaritaville and I will be watching this series pretty closely...

I got this from the Philly Daily News. Originally from the NY Post:

DILEMMA OF THE WEEK: New York Post columnist Mike Vaccaro posed an interesting proposition recently, comparing the Mets' collapses in 2007 and 2008 with a season in which they were out of the running early.

"The Mets are spending this weekend playing the Phillies down at Citizens Bank Park, an event you recognize only if you happen to be a) Jerry Manuel; b) Charlie Manuel; c) authoring a manual on how to endure brain-numbingly irrelevant baseball games on the opening weekend of the football season and the closing weekend of the U.S. Open," he wrote.

"And it certainly begs a question. Which is worse:

"Having your heart stomped on, trampled by muddy spikes and battered by nerve-racking angst?

"Or being invisible, indifferent and irrelevant?"

Mets fans. Not gloating, just curious. Do you have any thoughts?

In my memory, the Phillies were out of it for seasons at a time, so nobody expected anything, then they've been close to the end. I've never had a season of expectations met with mediocrity in baseball.

I'll take this year over the past two. 2006, 7, and 8 all had gut wrenching endings.

In 2006 they were this close to the World Series, which they had a great chance to win as the Tigers ended up playing like crap against St. Louis.

2007 was one of the biggest gag acts of all time. It felt like a runaway train heading hopelessly toward the edge of the cliff the last week or so.

Last year had the "This can't be happening again!" factor to it.

This year, they were done by the end of July. Totally wasted year with all the injuries. I haven't paid much attention lately, just generally apathetic.

Complete inteptitude is easier than killer endings.

I don't care what some columnist says. I won't give up on the Mets even if they're doing badly. And no game is ever irrelevant.
I was unconvinced that you counted as a Mets fan before, but after reading that comment I know for a fact that you aren't one.

Oh, really? Care to explain? I'd loooooooooove to hear this.

The Mets may be out of the running for the postseason, but I still enjoy watching them play. You are saying that I shouldn't. Pardon me for not remembering where I left my "care" face. The remaining games may not count for anything else except my enjoyment of them, but that's still something.

^I think it has more to do with you having a Yankees logo for your avatar. You really can't be a true fan of both teams. You really only get to be a true fan of one team per sport. You can like other teams, but there's always got to be one team who's on top.

So it's either Yankees fan or Mets fan. You get to pick one, not both. If you were in Chicago at either Wrigley or US Cellular field, you'd get laughed at (or worse) for saying you're a Cubs and White Sox fan. In sports, it's basically impossible.

"Enjoying watching them play" = casual fan. I don't 'enjoy' watching Penn State play if they lose - it's a gut wrenching experience and I can't watch anything related to college football for a solid week. I only 'enjoy' games in that sense if I like a team but don't particularly care about the outcome. Like with Boise State tonight. I picked BSU in my pickem, so I'm mildly interested in the outcome, but if they don't cover the spread I'll get over it pretty damn quickly.

See, I can't speak to the Mets, but last year Penn State looked like it could make the National Championship game until Iowa kicked a last second field goal. It was horrible. It took a long time to get over it. In 2006 we lost our second game of the season, finishing the season 9-4. That was much easier to take because my hopes were never high enough to be crushed - it was a gradual crash to reality. However, even then I would never have said that I'm happy just watching them play.

You remind me of my roommates. They'd be sad after a loss, but football games to them are just an entertaining way to spend Saturday afternoons. They don't take losses personally. I do. That's the heart of it.

Don't question my choice of teams. If I say I'm a fan of both, then by definition, I am. Besides, it's not like they play each other every day, is it? If they do, then yeah, I do prefer the Yankees. But most of the time they don't - interleague play is relatively rare. So I claim the right to root for both.

So it's either Yankees fan or Mets fan. You get to pick one, not both.

I get to pick whoever I feel like picking, thank you very much. You cannot tell me who to root for.

Yeah, well, good thing I'm not a Chicago fan then. And even if I was...the heck with them. I mean, what are they gonna do, send hit squads to my house? Who am I, Steve Bartman? :guffaw:

In sports, it's basically impossible.

No, not even close. I love New York; I love baseball; therefore I love New York baseball. And the Yankees and Mets are both NY baseball teams, therefore I am a fan of both!

I suppose it would be different if I grew up in New York. Then I probably would choose one or the other. But that didn't happen.

mimic, don't think that I'm not sad or angry or both if the Mets lose. I don't like it when that happens. I'd much prefer it if they won (unless of course they're playing the Yankees).

^I guess it doesn't make sense. You seem like a casual fan, like mimic said. Liking New York baseball is fine, and you're within your rights to do so. But the point is, you're not disappointed if the Mets lose to the Yankees. A diehard Mets fan would be disappointed when the Mets lose any game, especially one to the Yankees.

You're a casual Mets fan. And thats cool.

But the point is, you're not disappointed if the Mets lose to the Yankees.

No, but I *am* disappointed if the Mets lose to anyone else, and that counts for something.

Besides, like I said, the Mets and Yankees rarely play each other. So I really don't see the problem here.

Would you try to tell somebody that they can't be a fan of Star Trek and Firefly, for example? No? Then why this?

Of my friends at PSU I'd probably only consider maybe three of them 'real' fans. The vast majority are casual. It's not a bad thing to be a casual fan. I just don't think you "live and die" with the Mets.

Well, the Mets are now eliminated from playoffs :( but I think we all knew that was coming.

:(

Nats are beating the Mets right now.

I'm sorry, who are you to tell someone they're not a real fan? That is just bullshit.
