^^ No, it isn't because they are excellent. In fact I thought they were mediocre, but sadly that was still more engaging than everything else in the film.

After dropping in on Space's Trek film marathon over the Labour Day weekend I find TMP and even TWoK to be the only bearable films of the lot to watch. There's so much in the remaining eight films that I just barely can tolerate anymore if at all.
Fans, are there any of you who aren't aware of my opinions yet?
Har, har, har.

There are still character moments I enjoy in the films, but it's just not enough anymore. The rest just don't hold together for me anymore.

If character moments are your thing, how could you possibly prefer TMP to any of the others? If ever there was a soulless film that could have used more character moments, it's that. And the plot hardly made up for it.

The charcter moments in TMP were designed to give us insight into what drives these men--Kirk and Spock--rather than give us the sitcom style moments of charming camaraderie that films like TVH and TFF specialized in. Kirk and Spock are insufferable dicks during large parts of TMP but their dickishness is completely organic to the characters as we saw them in TOS when one takes into account where they were in their lives at the moment the movie begins: exactly where they should not have been. That can make the best of us into miserable bastards.

What character moments are the in TMP exactly? I can't think of more than about 2. Unless we include Kirk and Decker getting upset by each other. Of course, then it depends what we mean by character moment...

The Wrath of Khan. Khan was just the coolest best matched adversary to Kirk ever. The music was beautiful and highly emotional. Saa'vik was best played by Kirstie Alley. Great character writing and the theme of growing old was explored very well. How can you beat Spock's death at the end? We saw the Reliant which was the first time we saw another class of Starfleet ship and it looked fantastic.

Then there was the space chase for the ultimate weapon. A genesis device and what about those (then -and still hold up well by todays standards) CGI effects. Nothing like it had been seen. This is the very best crew, actors and writers all together.

What's my favourite? Star Trek: The Motion Picture, sure as the chemical formula for water or the transcendental nature of pi.

Shinzon's outfit in NEM was beyond the ridiculous... I mean really... how the heck would he go to the bathroom with that thing? And I don't think it could be machine washable at all. The only uniforms in Trek more blatantly ridiculous, and 1940's sci-fi-looking, was the Xindi "uniform" the reptilians wore... ugh.

IIRC, the Xindi Reptilian outfits were a reuse of the Reman costumes from Nemesis, actually. It shows.

Yeah, they just added those Slinky-like metallic rings to the shoulders of the costumes and tweaked a few other minor details to create the Reptillian outfits for ENT. They were recognizable as NEMESIS recycles right away, but looked cooler than they did in the movie so I could ignore it.
