I'm glad TMP has experienced a renaissance in recent years. For so long when I was growing up it was considered a high-tech, big-budget borefest. Grey. Colorless. Humorless. A chore to watch for so many. But its now more beloved than most of the movies that came after it in the series and that's so refreshing and wonderful to see. It's always had incredible music, effects and a deep philosophical approach most other modern sci-fi films lack.

This is exactly how I feel about TMP to this day... it's just 2001, with the name Star Trek on it... it's pedantic, boring, and dull. It should be called The Slow-Motion Picture. All it is is near 3 hours of music.

But, evidently, some people love it, for reasons beyond me, lol.

I liked

Star Trek II (the wrath of Khan): Gawd was Ricardo Montalban one good bad guy there...

Star Trek III (the search for Spock): I mainly liked this one due to the parallels between the Genesis planet and Spock having to grow up again.

Star Trek IV (the voyage home): My all time fave :). I just loved the humor in this one and the chemistry between the cast members just shines.

Star Trek Generations

Star Trek First Contact

Star Trek Insurrection

Star Trek Nemesis -- I liked the plot line of this one... but I didn't like the makeup or some of the costuming and I didn't like the film that they shot the outdoor scenes with... egad that was bad O_O.

Star Trek XI -- I just love this one :).

Never saw Inserection - it must have been that adult trek film - yet it was nemesis that had the leather fetish guys! Go figure?

NEMESIS and leather fetishes do have one thing in common.

After both, you feel VERY, VERY dirty and chafed.

Shinzon's outfit in NEM was beyond the ridiculous... I mean really... how the heck would he go to the bathroom with that thing? And I don't think it could be machine washable at all. The only uniforms in Trek more blatantly ridiculous, and 1940's sci-fi-looking, was the Xindi "uniform" the reptilians wore... ugh.

After dropping in on Space's Trek film marathon over the Labour Day weekend I find TMP and even TWoK to be the only bearable films of the lot to watch. There's so much in the remaining eight films that I just barely can tolerate anymore if at all.

A close friend of mine doesn't think all that highly of most Picard/TNG movies. But he doesn't hate NEMESIS either. He just thinks its too underdeveloped and the Picard-cloning story makes no sense given the TNG Federation/Romulan contact timeline. And I agree with that.

Whatever I think of the TOS based films the TNG ones are just wholly awful. Only GEN has some decent moments and those are because of Shatner.

Fans, are there any of you who aren't aware of my opinions yet?

I thought GEN was a colossal bore and that Shatner, while good, was wasted--much as McDowell was wasted. The only TNG movie I like is FC.

After FC, I find them difficult to rank--they all fall short in ways that are not exactly awful but bore me nevertheless.

The Enterprise-B opening of GEN makes a great TOS mini-movie, even with the downbeat ending.

Star trek IV voyage home was my favorite. Seeing the crew interact with real people of california. Spocks first encounter with profanity or as he put it more colorful mertaphor. Seeing them do normal things for their time but but to the people of the past it seemed like a miracle. Seeing spock rediscover himself and his humanity which had been surpressed for so many years. By telling his father to tell his mother I feel fine.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture is my favourite. Actually I rate it as my favourite movie of all time. :)

I know it has glaring flaws - most notably the pacing, but I don't care. I love the story, I love the set design, I love the MUSIC (best soundtrack ever imo) and I love the fact it just so science fictiony. All the other Star Trek movies are a lot more grounded in reality, but The Motion Picture with V'Ger is just so provocative, alien and awe-inspiring.

When I was little, I found it slightly confusing, but I always had that look of being completely gob-smacked and it would always captivate my interest, attention and spark my imagination. The movie is now 30 years old and one director's edition late, my feelings have not changed.

No other Star Trek movie does this (as much as I love many of them), and it's the reason TMP stands well apart for me.

Look good, sounds good, feels good. I love it.

As for the other movies, Nemesis is easily the stinker of the bunch, and The Search for Spock and The Final Frontier have enormous weaknesses. The rest are great, and yes, I am including XI in that too :P

Kirk, Scott and Chekov were excellent in GEN. Pity about the TNG part of the movie.
