this is not good. In hospital.

just been for the MRI, the registrar and said 'what's this coughing all about? I don't like it and want you to stop.' then we had a bit of a chat about how hard it is to get all the terry pratchett books. He looked at my mri results but not being his area all he could say was there's no obvious or big infection in the bones. But did say will probably be monday beforee detailed results he's also going to try oramorph and a different one and see if any help. So here's fingers crossed for that.
He's not one of you guys is he? You can tell me...

We should think of code words to identify ourselves in public! Say to him "Read any good MadBaggins lately?" - of course, if he isn't one of us you'll find yourself on the psych ward...

Good luck with the other tests.

It's good to see you haven't lost your humour, Bob. I feel for you, sounds really unpleasant, to say the least, especially the coughing. Here's hoping they find out what you have soon and that you recover quickly afterwards.

You could see if you could get hold of a TENS machine for your back pain. I found one invaluable when I had my spine problems. Good luck, Bob. Glad you've still got your sense of humour.

Have the hospital done a profile on the blood you've coughed up? That can sometimes be revealing of what's causing the bleeding.

Also, an abdominal ultrasound might reveal whether your lower back pain is caused by swollen artery or something like that.

I know I'd be nightmare if I am ever an inpatient with an unidentified condition. I'd be trying to get the staff to do allsorts of tests.

Hope you get some results and feel better soon, Bob :)

Not really. All it really tells is that it's blood, and perhaps if they find any organisms there (which really can come from anywhere along the respiratory tract from mouth to alveoli) or depending on the hospital, some viral cultures. A bronchoscopy will best tell if there is a specific source of bleeding somewhere - but such a source is only really found if there is a LOT of blood coming up, especially in visible clots.
Also, an abdominal ultrasound might reveal whether your lower back pain is caused by swollen artery or something like that.
It can find a large abdominal or thoracic aortic aneurysm (arguably a CT aortogram is more useful), but usually they are incidental findings unless the symptoms were very bad e.g. unexplained back pain, leg (sometimes arm) numbness and coldness, and if identifiable signs were found on examining the abdomen such as such an expansile mass or delays in the transmission of the pulse into the legs. (In very thin patients, one can feel a pulsatile aorta anyway, but an aneurysm can be very obviously felt.)

And we'd spend most of the time scaring you into not having them when we tell you what they entail.

Don't worry, that's where you find me. I won't section you, promise...

thanks for the offer Deckerd, but i'm getting there slowly but surely, got another 3 at home for now, then i'll get more, but got tons of others to be getting on with.

Right now they've just saying blood infection, which they are treating me for, they know what but, just not where the infection's centred, once they know they'll know how long treatment will last. Just hope it's somewhere easy.

As for they coughing blood, it's not they first time, i've had prolonged bouts in the past due to hardening arteries in my lungs connected with my existing condition, it's just the first time in about 3 years it's happened' i'd hoped treatment had made it a thing of the past. .

well they new painkillers, oxynorm I believe, seem to work better. Got almost a full night's sleep and got up without TOO much trouble. My temp seems to be down, and they've taken me off the saline drip.
Now the fact i'm so swelled had me concerned ankles and legs are real thick, fingers were the other night too. Waiting for a doctor to increase the diuretics.

I coughed up more blood today, seems to be getting harder to do so here's hoping it's passing.

Sounds like good news. I'm a big fan of oxycodone-based analgesics, myself. Sounds like you're on the mend. :)

Time to drain off that oedema next - probably a combination of the sepsis reaction (when your blood capillaries become extra leaky to fluid) and some of that fluid they gave you to stop yourself from being intravascularly deplete due to the septicaemia. Who knows... home next week?

Don't go getting my hopes up like that. Or it'll be on your head when i'm all depressed cos i'm not home.
Just saw a doc' they're doubling my fusemide for the swelling, and doing more blood tests.

I was wrong about the coughing, just coughed up about 100ml more. It's making me tired and ache a bit.

OK, sorry. I'll try not to stir up too much false hope from now on. :)

Keep those lungs cleared up - it's good to cough. :) I wonder if there's also some fluid on the lungs themselves too (also treatable with furosemide)? (Sometimes it can cause pinkish phlegm to come up.)

I'm sure the docs will have you on a cocktail of stuff that'll have you on the mend real quick. Good luck! :)

I'm sure the docs will have you on a cocktail of stuff...

The pharmacists keep trying to stop us doing this, but I think too many of us watched Tom Cruise and Bryan Brown doing their thing in the 80s, and we just can't stop...

well just reading that bit of banter made me feel a bit happier or wait that's the oxycodone kicking in.
Just coughed a little more blood up, some directly on the bed so the plan of painkillers then zone out isn't gonna work. Have to wait for the sheets to be changed and the nurses are busy.
Does seem to problem is cough and nose bleed related. And i'm generally feeling a whole lot better, even when the painkillers wear off. Even nurses have commented on how much better I look , but I can't tell since there's no mirror... with great difficulty before you ask about shaving.

In related news we decided to pass my cat on to my sister's in law who's cat died a few months ago. With not knowing how long i'll be in recovery figured it was for the best really, at least I know he has a good home and can visit.
