he wasn't lucky with THAT take. he planned it. he said so.
Is that interview available on line? I'd love to read it...
Yeah he just won't win a fist fight till he learns the two fisted chop.
Let's not forget the patented flying drop kick.
I actually always liked those moves, it was as if Kirk had learned that was the best way to fight species who were naturally much stronger than humans.
Not to say you're wrong, but in the whole sequence in the bar, from the banter with Uhura through to the end of the fight, ("You can whistle really loud, you know that?"I'm surprised no one's mentioned two examples in the bar scene:
-When Uhura and Kirk are next to each other and Kirk flirts with her, Pine's face is pointed as if he was looking at something behind her, but with the smirk, like Shatner always does when flirting with someone
-The exchange between Kirk and Cupcake:
Kirk: Oh, relax, cupcake. It was a joke.
Cupcake: Hey! Farmboy! Maybe you can't count, but there are four of us and one of you.
Kirk: So get some more guys and then it'll be an even fight.
Anybody could deliver that last line, but Pine instilling it with Shatner bravado is what sold the line.

The delivery of the Kirk-to-Cupcake lines you've quoted looked and sounded to me like pure James West.
Oh, Kirk and West definitely overlap, there's no question about that -- they were two different versions of the same thing -- but I found I could easily hear Conrad's West delivering the very same lines with the very same attitude (and pat to Cupcake's cheek) as Pine's Kirk, but not so easily picture Shatner's Kirk saying, in effect, "so there's one of me and lots of you - bring it on" in exactly the same way.Not to say you're wrong, but in the whole sequence in the bar, from the banter with Uhura through to the end of the fight, ("You can whistle really loud, you know that?"I'm surprised no one's mentioned two examples in the bar scene:

Well, James West and Jim Kirk are children of the 60s with supersmart sidekicks. Personalities are bound to intersect![]()
Did anyone else notice how well Chris Pine channeled Shatner at the end of the movie when he enters the bridge as Captain Kirk in his gold tunic?
And it wasn't just the crossing of the legs in the chair, but it was also the Shatner mannerisms in his walk, posture and smirk.
I was so impressed at Pine's Kirk through out the movie, but that last scene just screamed Shatner to me. I was blown away. I loved it for its subtlety.
