I'm so glad to see other people pointing out how Pine nailed Kirk.... especially in that last scene.

As I was watching this scene at the IMAX last night, it struck me that he was channeling Denny Crane (and I mean that in a good way :) ).

Spock and Kirk's away mission together on the Narada cemented their characterizations as a team; in the Jellyfish cabin was the first time I noticed Spock called Kirk "Jim."

When Pine exited the turbolift, he looked looked both ways, surveying his domain just like Shatner.

There is also this shot on the Narada where he is punched out... he does the same pain-reaction

I loved the final scene. His mannerisms and speech were a pitch-perfect imitation of Shatner. I would've been annoyed if it had been that way throughout the film, but as a tip of the hat at the end it worked well.

Yeah I have to give Pine credit where credit was due. I didn't like his Kirk much during the film as it was too remote from the Kirk that I was used to, but the final scene certainly did remind me of Shatner Kirk and that pleased me to no end.

I do think that he could have just been lucky with the take though and there is a danger that he will over do it next time.

I completely agree! When he steps off the stairs and calls out "Bones" he nailed Bill!

I thought it was a great bridge to the old series.

I am wondering if he will do more in the next movie... keep the character his own but give subtle nods of what is to come so to speak... I really liked Chris' portrayal of Kirk.

It either when Ayel hits him in the head.
Or when Nero punches him... not sure right now.
But it is that fight at the end after Spock has taken off with the Jellyfish.

The exhasperated "Numb tongue??!!" sounded very Shatner-like to me.

Let's not forget the patented flying drop kick.

I actually always liked those moves, it was as if Kirk had learned that was the best way to fight species who were naturally much stronger than humans.

i love how they actually pay homage to oldtrek at the same time make fun of it. it's great! i think it was a great contribution to the movie the way they did that. homage for the old fans and humor for viewers who don't know oldtrek or didn't care for it.

I thought the reprogramming would simply leave a loophole in the scenario that he (knowing about it in advance) could exploit. Something that "Grim Jim" the "stack of books with legs" would come up with.

I STILL think that's how Kirk Prime did it.

I think Pine's Kirk being so obvious about waving the "I'm cheating" flag in everyone's face is an example of how different his background became because of losing his father.

Back on OT: Yes, that last scene he was DEFINITELY chanelling Shatner. To one degree or another, the entire prime cast was. It was really eerie, and really cool. I was crying when I saw it. (Then we got to the "Space..." scene and I REALLY lost it...)

That's a very good way to describe it. There were glimpses of Shatnerisms in spots, and I really give credit to Pine for being able to pull it off without ever being cheesy.

Not to forget the "Turn your back on your opponent, then kick off the wall into the flying ass punch routine". Hopefully that does not result in getting stabbed next time. If Pine can pull THAT off, he's Kirk for life. :techman:
