Friday & Weekend Numbers - $2.5M/$8.5M

Simply awesome. Be interesting to see how close to a million a day Star Trek can do M-Th, and whether there will be a hefty spike for the weekend again.

Any competition out there for the weekend?

The Taking of Pelham 123 should be a draw for adult audiences and make at least $20-25 million.

Imagine That (Eddie Murphy) might draw some families since his family comedies tend to do well. I'd guess $15-20 million.

So, Star Trek will finally be pushed out of the Top 5.

I think a lot of things came together to make TDK a hit--what many considered a great script (I liked it a lot, personally), following up a movie that successfully rebooted the franchise (BB was a really solid film) and yes, Ledger's death (though I remember hearing about how awesome his performance was even before he died). If Star Trek XII can be on a similar plane in terms of quality and box office, that would be awesome.

For now, though, it's great to see Star Trek XI kicking butt. :D

Could Trek beat LotL?

Edit--never mind, NatM will still be strong...

Night at the Museum also. Land of the Lost, even if it falls 70%, it would still make $5.5-6 million. Star Trek will probably pull in somewhere around $5 million next weekend (assuming a 40% drop).

Looks like $250 million domestic seems reasonable before its all said and done.

Yeah realized the NatM thing... and it is wishful thinking I guess...

The inevitable fade... continues.

At least it is a very slow fade.

The Moon starring Sam Rockwell could distract sci-fi fans from Star Trek:(. They are calling it the next 2001. I have seen the trailer and its looks good.

It did not have a great impact on the box office, and it was a GREAT movie.

I have to think it did personally. I mean I can't imagine that Batman and Heath Ledger, on their own, suddenly and magically became a $1 Billion entity on their own merits.

The first Batman movie from 1989 made about $500 million domestically when you adjust for inflation, and then another $160 million international unadjusted (which is probably at least $300+ million adjusted). So, that's around $800 million adjusted.

Yes, that was then though. The previous film, Batman Begins, made $372 Million worldwide three years earlier in 2005. The movies Heath Ledger starred in weren't exactly "tearing it up" at the box office either, which is no fault of his of course. So was it just a coincidental sudden interest in Heath Ledger and a sudden rejuvenation in the Batman saga that made TDK successful? Sorry, I can't buy that at all.

Honestly, I think he is a fine actor and all. But he sadly dies, and here comes the media, and ultimately the publicity for the movie, as morose as that may sound. The media became infatuated with Heath which indirectly gave the film, a film that likely would be high profile fare none the less, a hell of a lot more exposure.

I didn't say Heath Ledger's death didn't have any effect. Of course it did. WB got months of free marketing and promotion.

I'm just saying that the audience was there and available to enable a Batman film to be that successful. Batman isn't just some unknown entity. Even in 1989, coming off of only a comic book history and a campy TV show from decades before, the film managed to make a lot of money and become the #5 highest grossing film at the time.

I know you didn't say that. I was saying that more in general for those who imply that The Dark Knight would have been just as equally successful had Heath still been here.
