Cheesiest Lines

I'd agree that the movie was surprising cheese-free, though if I had to pick one it would be be "I'll be monitoring your frequency" or "You know what the Federation is, don't you? Its a peace-keeping and humanitarian armada".

"You know what the Federation is, don't you? Its a peace-keeping and humanitarian armada".

The use of the term "armada" surprised me, as it connotes militarism. I'm having trouble thinking of a better word, however. Organization? Community of planets? Alliance?

Well, that and the fact that the Federation is in no way an armada, the term may apply to Starfleet, but not the Federation. Also, its a multi-planetary organization so saying its 'Humanitarian' is a complete misnomer. Basically, every word of the sentence is wrong and yes, cheese.

Heh... yeah, I'm reminded of the Klingon chancellor's daughter in The Undiscovered Country...

"Listen to yourselves... inalienable human rights... The very term is racist."

...Slightly paraphrased.

Every race uses their own term for "people" when speaking among themselves.

^What term would be better than 'humanitarian'? We do not really have a universally understood word which could be used in its place.

Wow, I had no idea the word "armada" was used as they used a more peaceful sounding word in the French translation (I think it was "organisation"). The term "armada" is indeed a bit too military like.
I thought the line was cheesy too, especially as it's obvious that Kirk must know what the Federation is
I think it was there for the viewers who didn't know Star Trek at all.

I have to agree on the "I'll be monitoring your frequency" line though it could have been much worse if they had kept Spock's line from the novelization, something like "I have someone/something to come back to" in the same scene. That would already have been bad for a human but with Spock... No, just no.

Kirk's pick up lines in the bar were meant to be lame and saddly, I've recognized all of them

I've tried to come up with other cheesy lines but:
1) Only the good ones came up ;)
2) I saw the movie only French dubbed so it's very tricky

"What sort of hand-to-hand experience do you have?"

"Fencing!"

Sulu did say it in kind of a quiet, "you're not going to like this," way.

To me a cheesey line or action is one that comes off flat or stupid. It wasn't taken as intended, was inappropriate for the context, or was delivered very poorly.

It's not a line, but to me, the only really cheesey moment was when Kirk bumped his head on the beam going to his seat on the shuttle. It was cheesey when Scotty did it in TFF, and it was a cheesey and stupid for Kirk to do, too.

For me it was "better" with Kirk because at least it was a pay-off for him being smug and self-serving and at least he was in an unfamilliar area.

Scotty: "I know this ship like the back of my hand!" :clunk:

Honestly, the Sulu thing was the best I could think of as nothing stuck out and, granted, it's not all that cheesy. To me it was just, "Really, Sulu? Really?! He asked for hand-to-hand combat and you come up with that you have this experience because you fence?! Further, isn't fencing really more of a showman's "sport" and not a form of combat. And isn't it oh, I dunno, NOT "hand to hand."

But, I grant you it wasn't cheesy. I just couldn't think of anything.

I think Kirk's reaction to this line is as important as the line itself. This whole scene on the shuttle is Kirk assessing the skills and abilities of his team, as any good captain/commander would, IMO.
"You know what the Federation is, don't you? Its a peace-keeping and humanitarian armada".
Perhaps it was just me, but I thought Pike was describing StarFleet rather than the Federation in this scene. I will have to check it out again.

Most of Spock Prime's lines were pretty cheesy.

I did think it pretty cheesy that one of the first things he said upon meeting Kirk was "I have been and always shall be your friend." Worse yet, I actually predicted that he would say that.

Yeah, I know it's Spock's "goto" line with Kirk, but I thought that was a little bit out of place.

I also didn't care for "And then the unthinkable happened." during mind meld. It's a big weasel line, and pretty hackneyed besides. It was supposed to make me feel for Spock's failure, but was the only truly wince inducing thing in the film for me.

No.

I thought Kirk hitting on Uhura was kind of lame, dialog-wise. Most of it wasn't anything we haven't heard several billion times before. The badass with a good heart and the girl who can hold her own type of thing.

I think it was supposed to be lame - to show what an aimless cliche Kirk was before he joined Starfleet. Any woman whose been hit on in a bar knows there are no truly clever pick-up lines.

That being said, I thought the dialogue in that scene wasn't all that bad (except the annoying ad in Uhura's order, though it was balanced a bit by the mention of Slusho - which is a running gag in all JJ Abrams shows, as well as in "Heroes").

Maybe. I never thought of it that way.

Me, I just go the insanity route with my pick-up lines.

"I'll be monitoring your frequency".

Oh, yes.

Still, there's far fewer than any other Trek film. That was the only one that made me roll my eyes. I actually liked the "I am relieved", and was surprised it didn't get more of a chuckle from the audience.

The novel has some terrible dialogue, most notably the "stimulation" pun from Uhura.

Is really any of this any worse than, "In the event of an emergency I have been designed to serve as a flotation device!"

Hey I laughed at that one. It was cheesy, but in a good way.

No. No it wasn't. For the following reasons:

1. Geordi once recanted a story where Data sunk straight the the bottom of a lake.

2. That's a very anachronistic term for the 24c.

3. Data SHOULD know that an alien woman living in the future wouldn't even "get" the joke to begin with.

No. It was purely there to make the 20th-century audience who's flown commercial airlines (or at least are familiar with safety anoucements on them) to laugh.

The line makes ZERO sense in the context of the universe and situation Data is in.

The cheesiest thing wasn't a line - it was the unecessary bloated hands scene.

I'll give you that, and raise you the "intert reactant"/turbine scene with Scotty.

Both pretty cheesy and "slapsticky" but otherwise not a big deal. I liked during the swollen-hands scene McCoy kept giving Kirk hypos. (Though Hypos are supposed to be PAINLESS!!)

That whole "victor, victor" scene. The whole thing is about as cheesy in a bad way as anything ever committed to film. >.<

I thought McCoy's line where he called Spock a 'green-blooded hobgoblin' was cheesy, and out of place. It's never mentioned before that Vulcan blood is green, and earlier in the film McCoy said he LIKED Spock. Yes, he's irritated, but the only reason that line gets a laugh is it's from TOS. I'm sure filmgoers unfamiliar with the early TV show just sat there thinking, "Huh? Why is THAT funny? People in the future really use archaic words like 'hobgoblin'? And why did he say his blood is green? What a weird line."
