"You know what the Federation is, don't you? Its a peace-keeping and humanitarian armada".
Most of Spock Prime's lines were pretty cheesy.
"You know what the Federation is, don't you? Its a peace-keeping and humanitarian armada".
The use of the term "armada" surprised me, as it connotes militarism. I'm having trouble thinking of a better word, however. Organization? Community of planets? Alliance?
Also, its a multi-planetary organization so saying its 'Humanitarian' is a complete misnomer.
Wow, I had no idea the word "armada" was used as they used a more peaceful sounding word in the French translation (I think it was "organisation"). The term "armada" is indeed a bit too military like. The use of the term "armada" surprised me, as it connotes militarism. I'm having trouble thinking of a better word, however. Organization? "What sort of hand-to-hand experience do you have?"
"Fencing!"
Sulu did say it in kind of a quiet, "you're not going to like this," way.
To me a cheesey line or action is one that comes off flat or stupid. It wasn't taken as intended, was inappropriate for the context, or was delivered very poorly.
It's not a line, but to me, the only really cheesey moment was when Kirk bumped his head on the beam going to his seat on the shuttle. It was cheesey when Scotty did it in TFF, and it was a cheesey and stupid for Kirk to do, too.
I think Kirk's reaction to this line is as important as the line itself. This whole scene on the shuttle is Kirk assessing the skills and abilities of his team, as any good captain/commander would, IMO."What sort of hand-to-hand experience do you have?"
"Fencing!"

Perhaps it was just me, but I thought Pike was describing StarFleet rather than the Federation in this scene. I will have to check it out again."You know what the Federation is, don't you? Its a peace-keeping and humanitarian armada".
Most of Spock Prime's lines were pretty cheesy.
I did think it pretty cheesy that one of the first things he said upon meeting Kirk was "I have been and always shall be your friend." Worse yet, I actually predicted that he would say that.
Most of Spock Prime's lines were pretty cheesy.
No.
I thought Kirk hitting on Uhura was kind of lame, dialog-wise. Most of it wasn't anything we haven't heard several billion times before. The badass with a good heart and the girl who can hold her own type of thing.
I think it was supposed to be lame - to show what an aimless cliche Kirk was before he joined Starfleet. Any woman whose been hit on in a bar knows there are no truly clever pick-up lines.
That being said, I thought the dialogue in that scene wasn't all that bad (except the annoying ad in Uhura's order, though it was balanced a bit by the mention of Slusho - which is a running gag in all JJ Abrams shows, as well as in "Heroes").
"I'll be monitoring your frequency".
Is really any of this any worse than, "In the event of an emergency I have been designed to serve as a flotation device!"

Hey I laughed at that one. It was cheesy, but in a good way.
The cheesiest thing wasn't a line - it was the unecessary bloated hands scene.
