What is your biggest gripe about fan films.

If orget which episode of New Voyages it was but the acting was the best ever compared to any of them..it was where the future Kirk and Spock came back in time to help the regular Enterprise, In Harms Way I think. But my biggest gripe in the fan films is the acting and some of the stunts, I mean they are soooo bad it isn't funny. At least read some books or something on acting.

^^^Ah yes, this must be some strange usage of the word "real" I wasn't previously aware of.

The only one that I realy have is the green haze aroudn people in the grene screen ones, but it's not really that big of a deal. I really enjoy most fan films a lot.

I gotta tell ya, I give fan productions a break. However, the level of expectation depends on where the “show” is. For example, the new Voyages/Phase II group is the one Paramount allows the use of the Star Trek name. NV/P2 raised the bar, so it’s on them to keep the standards they set. For the most part, they have. The stories have gotten more streamlined and less “kitchen sink.” I don't see the need to tie in aspects of Trek lore as much as I would rather see something that would likely be seen in an actual episode. So, since the original show didn't do a lot of inner references to one-off characters, I prefer the same thing with fan films. This might be seen as limiting, but I think it forces writers to create more original characters and settings.

Exeter would be in the same league if they had the resources to complete episodes more quickly. They’re an amazing group and it sucks they are sidelined by time, money and God.

The smaller scale ones are honestly just fans making a story based on their favorite show. 99% of these folks don’t have any acting experience. Some may have natural talent that’s pretty painless to watch, but on the whole, professional actors work in the business and get paid.

If you want professional acting, music, directing and so on, pop in a Trek DVD. Otherwise, it’s free, so I either watch or don’t. Depends on the production.

Writing is a tough thing. It’s easy to say “they should have good scripts,” but you know, a lot of Fan Fiction, frankly, sucks. The writers are proud of the work and think it’s good (no writer not working for Irwin Allen writes a crap script intentionally), but not everyone has writing talent. Shit, I’ve read badly written books by professionally published authors. People do the best they can. If you think you can do better, then write something. That’s the least expensive part of any production. And if you've got time to bitch on a message board, you have time to write a story.

This comment is interesting though:

And you don't need to recycle old Trek music... be innovative, and write your own new scores.

Lotsa folks can take wood and plaster and hammer together a set: you need the materials and arms. Many people can write a script or dialog: all you need is an idea and the means to put it on paper. Anyone can grab a camcorder and tape people wearing funny clothing. And, worst case scenario, anyone with Pinnacle 9 can put an Art Asylum Enterprise replica against a green background and chroma key it against a planet. Granted, you can wind up with a Little Rascals version of Trek, but these things are attainable.

But how many people can write a score, hire musicians and record it? If you want it to sound halfway decent, you need multiple musicians, a conductor, a recording studio, editor, etc. Sure, a decent one-dude musician with a good keyboard can make a score, but how is that more effective than Sol Kaplan’s music from the CD? Synth scores sound like synth scores. And fine, for the Little Rascals Version, it’ll be fine. But I really give them a break on the reuse of music because, IMO, creating a score is one of the more difficult and expensive things to do in a fan film. I mean, jeez, once the sets and props are built, they’re built. A new score each time? Yikes.

You guys are still here? Well, as long as we're discussing fan productions. I did have a specific gripe about one of the New Voyages/Phase 2 episodes, and I think you folks will quickly determine which that was.

Maybe it's because I'm looking at these "episodes" as just that, episodes of a longer arc of stories (and not movies or mini-movies), but I figure what happens in an episode needs to have a solution to the problem around which the story is based on.

Yeah, I"m talking about the end of "To Serve All My Days" when the original Chekov (Koenig in terrific form) and the Andy Bray version take the final walk into eternity, and in the next episode Bray is hale and hearty.

(By the way, I still prefer Bray's version of Chekov over the guy who played that role in the Trek XI movie. Bray was born to be Chekov).

I'm fairly aware of at least some of the reasons this happened. Writer Dorothy Fontana wanted to write a "big finish" for the character, and Keonig wanted it too, so it behooved New Voyages folks to go along with what the "stars" wanted. Sadly, it's the only moment in the series that disappointed me.

That's not to dismiss the terrific duet of Bray and Koenig talking about their life in just one word--"Tribbles"--I was happy to see the rest of the episode. Again, the writer part of me who has seen episodes for many years and saw cast members come and go with the passage of time.

Now, I don't get into discussion of this kind of thing without giving my idea of what I'm criticizing. I would have followed the final scene with the Chekovs walking into eternity, but I'd only have Koenig go to the big starship in the sky and Bray's Chekov watching that version disappear. I know this doesn't answer the problem of Chekov getting older, but at least it would have given the "gone but not forgotten" scene everyone wanted. Perhaps the old Chekov could have taken the effect with him.

That's not a huge criticism, but as I've always said about DS9, "When every week we get a great episode, it's disappointing when it's 'merely' good."

just don't get me started on "Of Gods and Men." There were many more flaws in that production than all of Phase 2's epics combined! And I still greatly enjoyed it!

My biggest gripe often in the script. I've seen a number where they don't bother to think out the plot and it shows (badly). Believe me, I've done some production so I do realize how hard it is get get everything together that they do to be able to produce and finish these things, but GIVEN all that - you'd think more time would be spent making sure a script story works well.

bad acting and bad writing really bother me.
I'm also not that fond of productions that force alternative sexuality down the audience's throat in unsubtle, needlessly political ways.

It wasn't a big deal to me in the New Voyages episode but in Hidden Frontier they did that very badly. Basically a guy was almost forced to be gay despite his real beliefs.

Ssosmcin I agree with you totally about the music. I majored in music in high school and college and let me say that writing a score that involves all the instruments is a task for musician majors who want to get into performances instead of teaching. Writing a score for a movie is a HUGE undertaking. I see nothing wrong with recycling trek scores.

Exactly. And there's a world of difference between "forced" and "torn between." Hidden Frontier, like any of the fan films, has its faults; however I think pointing the finger of blame at the way it handles homosexual relationships signals not only an unfair critique but also reveals a somewhat uninformed perspective of the show.

Still waiting for your rebuttal, Zeppster.

To me the entire thing seemed like it was written just to have a gay relationship and there was the guy disregarded his beliefs to suddenly be gay. It seemed forced to me.
