Well IMAX is screen size, DP is ... not necessary dependent on screen size, right?

Meh. I'll google as time permits.. :p

Hmm...looks like Monday may exceed my own optimistic projection of 6.5M...

You know, it'd be beyond awesome if Trek could beat Terminator next weekend. No, I don't think there is a chance in hell of that happening, but that would be SO COOL.

Re: Weekend Estimates - Star Trek #3 - $29 million - $191 million

Trek made $500k from 130 IMAX midnight showings, according to BOM.

Re: Weekend Estimates - Star Trek #3 - $29 million - $191 million

With a $29 million weekend take, the movie is still doing great at the box office, but wait until the dvd is released. I believe we will see some extremely encouraging sales numbers there as well. This may be the first Star Trek film in a long while to have strong video sales outside the normal Trek fanbase. In the end this benefits all of us. Love it, hate it or something in-between, everyone is talking about Star Trek again, and that is a good thing. :techman:

Re: Weekend Estimates - Star Trek #3 - $29 million - $191 million

I think I read in a JJ interview somewhere that he didn't like the IMAX format. and that Mindel and he decided for the DP at some point because of that reason. don't quote me though. I can't find that interview for the life of me. maybe somebody else here will.

I read somewhere that Lucas tried to talk Abrams into filming with digital cameras but Abrams used 35mm instead.

I think they will use IMAX cameras next time considering how much $$$ they made in just two weeks at IMAX. Look at Avatar - that movie is going to be in IMAX for 3 months! Trek needs to cash in on that, maybe even do some 3D as well if Avatar (the new James Cameron movie) revolutionises things as people are anticipating it will.

Batman Begins sold 11 million DVDs from a lower Box office take than what Trek will do. I am hoping for 70% or more of that figure (DVD sales are in decline, but I think Trek will be really big on Blu-Ray)

Re: Weekend Estimates - Star Trek #3 - $29 million - $191 million

Agreed, I think the film will look great on Blu-Ray.

Re: Weekend Estimates - Star Trek #3 - $29 million - $191 million

I will buy the blu-ray but also obtain the Blu-Ray x264 rip for my media centre PC :)

Digital projection (I assume that's what you mean by "DP" ;) ) is NOT dependent upon screen size. I have a digital projector in my home cinema and the screen size is 64 inch diagonal (small room, so it seems bigger--when the gear gets moved to the larger room in the basement in a few years, the screen size will double but my current projector would be sufficient for that size as well).

When you get a rip like this will it play at 1080p if your monitor and video card is capable?

Yes it will, well it does on my computer anyway. Core2Duo 2.4ghz & ATI card (forgot which card) It depends on the specs.

Interesting... I suppose picture quality is better than regular film? Otherwise why the distinction at the theater?

190,391,000 or 191,034,000 domestic take as of my last look... waiting eagerly for "official" numbers tomorrow.

DP? Double-penetration?

Is that how Terminator-Salvation is feeling, getting the thrust from the Enterprise's wonderous nacelles? :borg:

Re: Weekend Estimates - Star Trek #3 - $29 million - $191 million

star trek during severa theatres prime time were given back the theatres with the dp systems.
it is now the thing go to know that trek left imax.
if you go to fandango in many cities they will list the screens at a theatre with the dp systems.

Re: Weekend Estimates - Star Trek #3 - $29 million - $191 million

Wonder if it would make sense to shoot the next Trek (there, I said it--the next Trek) in IMAX format?

If they're going to bother, they should go all the way. Trek in OmniMax!

The Air & Space museum has a really small IMAX theater as these things go. Don't sit in the front few rows there......trust me. Neck cramps.

Re: Weekend Estimates - Star Trek #3 - $29 million - $191 million

does it look worse in regular format if it's shot in IMAX?

The Dark Knight had scenes filmed specifically for IMAX, but I didn't notice anything that stood out watching it in a traditional theatre.

This is true for every movie screen, but especially IMAX. When I went on opening day, we didn't get great seats. But honestly during the movie I was too engrossed to care that much :)
