Wknd Est - Star Trek #3 - $29.4 million - $191 million (Final Numbers)

Re: Weekend Estimates - Star Trek #3 - $29 million - $191 million

Well if this one doesnt beat TMP adjusted then I am sure the next one will.

Re: Weekend Estimates - Star Trek #3 - $29 million - $191 million

Comparing to adjusted figures can be interesting, but you should also take into account that home video was in such infant stages in 1979. Nowadays, many people will think: 'I'll watch it when it comes out on DVD'.

Exactly. The business model has changed dramatically since the first movie came out so a simplistic comparison of "adjusted for inflation" numbers is not nearly as conclusive as it seems. At minimum, one needs to count DVD sales and rentals within the timeframe of the earlier films' theatrical stays (30 years ago, fewer movies per year were made and those that were tended to stay in the cinema houses a lot longer, on average, than today).

A more meaningful comparison of "success", in my opinion, would be to compare how each film performed overall in its own year of release relative to others in that time (12 months from opening day, not just the calendar year it came out--to compensate for films opening late in the year).

Re: Weekend Estimates - Star Trek #3 - $29 million - $191 million

I wonder what it was like, before VHS was popular, and the only chance you had to see a film was in theaters. You could conceivably go years without seeing you favorite movie unless someone replayed it in theaters or it happened to be on early tv.

Re: Weekend Estimates - Star Trek #3 - $29 million - $191 million

yeah that is why movies played so long and how some of those early films like Gone with the Wind and Casablanca, etc made so much money, even in today's dollars..

If done correctly, I concur.

Man, T4 looks to be a domestic tank, which I didn't think possible.

Close to 30 is a great 4-day take; 200 million is assured, Batman Begins a lock, I would think.

Anything more is gravy.

Yes, It will hit $200 by Saturday morning.

Box Office Guru puts the studio estimate at $29.4 million, with a total of $191 million.

That's exactly what it was like. Back in the day, getting first broadcast rights to a movie was a big deal for the networks, and the Movie of the week was a big deal in our house. Of course, there were certain ones that ran over and over (I can't tell you how many times I saw that Damnation Alley movie.) But whe TMP got its premiere, it was a big deal in my house.

Excellent...even BOM is reporting that figure.

Funny how Wolverine is still lingering, dropping off less than I thought it would.

Be interesting to see how the next few weeks play out.

Return to IMAX!

second run theatres did brisk business. my dad took my bro and me to watch TMP in a second run theatre (for a dollar a ticket) 'cos we'd missed TMP during its release.

For what it's worth, Night at the Museum 2 made $4.1 million from 160 IMAX screens, whereas Star Trek made $8.5 million on 138 IMAX screens

Ha! I knew it people wouldn't be foolish enough to watch that genre of movie in IMAX.

That might bode well for a return engagement of Trek at IMAX, no?

Re: Weekend Estimates - Star Trek #3 - $29 million - $191 million

I seriously hope so. I know the Air and Space near me is having a Trek return engagement in June. can't wait! :D

Re: Weekend Estimates - Star Trek #3 - $29 million - $191 million

Wonder if it would make sense to shoot the next Trek (there, I said it--the next Trek) in IMAX format?

Re: Weekend Estimates - Star Trek #3 - $29 million - $191 million

does it look worse in regular format if it's shot in IMAX?

I guess that's the question, and I've heard it raised before. Not sure... any way to shoot it in 2 formats simultaneously?

Re: Weekend Estimates - Star Trek #3 - $29 million - $191 million

I think I read in a JJ interview somewhere that he didn't like the IMAX format. and that Mindel and he decided for the DP at some point because of that reason. don't quote me though. I can't find that interview for the life of me. maybe somebody else here will.

Have you seen it in DP? Was there a difference? I might go work permitting to a late showing...
